GTA 6 Ultimate Edition Talking Point

It's common knowledge, but GTA 6 pre-orders opened this week. That's right, we're now one step closer to the reality of Rockstar's latest actually releasing in November.

The hype has been abundantly clear to see — it's all any gaming website has posted about for the last 72 hours. God only knows how many pre-orders the title's racked up already.

But for me, there's a disappointingly sinister undertone to all of this. I know Rockstar needs to make its money back on what is likely the most expensive video game ever produced, but its so-called 'Ultimate Edition' leaves a sour taste.

The Ultimate Edition is a more expensive version of GTA 6, offering up a range of additional content if you're willing to pay an extra $20 / £20.

Now, usually, these kinds of deals — Deluxe Editions and the like — are fairly straightforward, giving you access to frankly unnecessary content like flashy character skins, or other cosmetic bits and bobs. You might even get a digital art book thrown in, if you're lucky.

And sometimes, it's stuff that you'll get by playing the game anyway — you're just unlocking it early in a bid to ease progression (which is borderline nonsensical, when you think about it).

But GTA 6 is taking this model beyond what many believe to be acceptable. You could even argue that it sets a dangerous precedent going forward, given the sheer scale of GTA's influence.

To recap, a whole bunch of in-game shops are locked behind the Ultimate Edition. These stores will exist within the game's world regardless, but apparently, you won't be able to enter them unless you're an Ultimate Edition owner.

Here's a quick list of said shops, all of which offer unique cosmetics and / or upgrades:

  • Mod Shop: Rideout Customs
  • Mod Shop: One-Eyed Willie's
  • Hair Salon: Sara's Unisex Salon
  • Clothing Store: Stock 305
  • Tattoo Shop: Electric Fang Tattoo

But that's not all! A more gameplay-focused inclusion is up for grabs as well, in the form of an additional mission which sees you raid the PTT Youngin$ Compound, netting you "special items and distinct contraband".

For some, this paywalled mission may be the most egregious thing about the Ultimate Edition — but it is worth mentioning that Red Dead Redemption 2 offered a similar incentive.

The 2018 masterpiece gave you access to a unique bank heist that was... underwhelming to say the least. It took about ten minutes to complete and the rewards were paltry.

Still, GTA 6's offering is piled on top of more typical exclusives, like cars, weapons, and outfits. The Ultimate Edition nets you a lot of extras — but should any game be paywalling this much content, really?

I've seen people saying that you're actually getting a generous amount of stuff for just $20 more — but isn't that the problem?

Sure, customising the look of GTA 6 leads Jason and Lucia won't be a priority for some players, but this starts to feel like you're not getting the full experience if you miss out on the Ultimate Edition. And therein lies the issue.

Rockstar and Take Two know all too well that plenty of people will see the option of a $20 upgrade and take it, purely based on the long list of exclusive additions. They've waited all this time for GTA 6 — what's the harm in handing over a bit more cash?

But I want to know how you feel about this. Is GTA 6's Ultimate Edition a step too far? Is there any justification for paywalling this much stuff? Has it put you off buying the game at all, or are you still going to grab it? Vote in the polls, and then add some extras in the comments section below.
