An exciting end to the week brought us arguably the best State of Play of all time, refreshing our enthusiasm for the summer showcase schedule. But while there's lots to look forward to in the future, there are games to be played right now. Here's what's on our agenda.
Sammy Barker, Editor
I'm meandering between a number of different games while I find something to settle on, but I think I might finally wrap up my Platinum in Horizon Forbidden West if I get chance.
Robert Ramsey, Deputy Editor
I'm actually looking forward to spending a few hours with Assassin's Creed Origins this weekend, following its PS5 patch. I'm really interested in seeing how it holds up roughly five years after its release, especially having played a lot of Odyssey and Valhalla since.
Liam Croft, Assistant Editor
You guessed it: more Final Fantasy XIII! It's still pretty linear, but it's still pretty good.
Aaron Bayne, Video Editor
After noticing that one of my mates was dipping their toe back in the Battlefront 2 waters, I've got this old boy reinstalled and have been having a blast with it. I fully intend to showcase that Stormtrooper aim across the entire weekend.
Jamie O'Neill, Reviewer
The four game PS4 Wonder Boy Collection just released on Friday, where I think the Mega Drive's 1994 Monster World IV will be the standout game to grab people's time and attention.

I played 3DS games for this weekend. 🙂
1. Yokai Watch 3 Tempura
2. Yokai Watch 1
I'm going to be diving into the "Mafia" trilogy which I found heavily discounted (you might say it was an offer I couldn't refuse) earlier in the week. It should keep me busy for a while.
Nothing as I’ve injured myself doing DIY. And it’s my hols off work.. tragedy
@LN78 I played the remaster not that long ago and really enjoyed it other than the one infamously difficult mission. I probably would have aimed for the plat if it hadn’t been for that one. I don’t remember it being so difficult on PS2. Enjoy
If I get time away from celebrating the Jubilee weekend I'll just be finishing Ratchet and Clank Nexus. My PS3 backlog will finally be clear and can start playing my PS4 games on my PS5.
I’m currently making my way through AC Unity on PS5. Enjoying it so far though it’s definitely not the best AC. I’ve got Prey and RE Village to start as well!
Back into Elden Ring after briefly hitting a wall, but likely to play some more of the new Destiny season first. And now I have AC Origins winking at me in all its 60fps glory from my backlog…
@Mikey856 Ah that sucks. Get well soon.
Having poured a bazillion hours into Elden Ring, I am closing in on the ending this weekend. Then, some Origins.
Finally found the time to finish Horizon Forbidden West and get the platinum trophy. Starting with the PS5 version of Cyberpunk this weekend (got the platinum on PS4) and switching between that one and Ghost of Tsushima.
Nioh 1, hoping to finish the water boss at the end of region 2…. Am getting slightly closer each time!
And on Switch… hoping to start dipping back into MHRise, ahead of Sunbreak dropping in a few weeks. Put it down about a year ago (after ~150hrs) and am expecting to be extremely rusty
@JudgeDredd thanks mate. Unfortunately it is pretty bad. Lump hammer met thumb at a rate of knots.. you can probably picture the scene. Apologies if you’re eating breakfast.
PS5: Replaying all story missions in Devil May Cry 5 as Vergil this time. The combat is as satisfying as ever.
XSX: Assassin’s Creed: Origins. Gotta give Ubisoft credit here, the game runs and looks incredible. Hard to think it’s almost 5 years old now. I played it on PC back then, I remember the optimization was complete garbage with constant crashes.
Sniper Elite 4: The fifth game left me wanting more. The core principles of these games are simple but still so much fun!
see if i can finish the cabaret club and clan creator in yakuza kiwami 2.
also a bit of sniper elite 5.
I am trying to get my platinum in Sifu, love the game and now I have most of the keys each run through is nice an swift.
Also having seen the state of play this week I decided to dig out my copy of Capcom belt action on the Switch.
I restarted FFXV this week, and oh boy the story is still a big a mess as I remeber.
Still Cyberpunk 2077 and GT 7, the excellent State of Play on Thursday has me thinking what to play next. The plan was to give GotG a go (on a Marvel kick at present) but tempted to go for Resi 8 instead. Not this weekend though, the adventures of V and trying to get that final S Licence will take up my time!
No Royalist so definitely not celebrating this Jubilee nonsense, but I hope those that do have a good time and everyone else.
@PenguinLtd demons souls remake is my top ps5 game so far
@Mikey856 you weren't trying to put together a barbecue, were you?
If so, d'oh!
More Forbidden West for me. Good game overall but still prefer the first one, especially in the story department.
Have a good one folks!
Motorstorm rc, sniper elite v2 and Sherlock Holmes chapter one. 🚗 🔫🔍
After well over a year off I'm back on Genshin Impact. I rinsed it to the point that there was nothing whatsoever left to do so it's great to come back and have some actual content to go at with Chasm and Inazuma. Playing the PS5 version too which is a massive improvement over the original release. Good stuff.
Over on XSX I picked up the complete edition of AC Origins for £9 so I'll probably check that out tomorrow. Have a good weekend all!
Ps5
Sifu, Kaito Files, Dying Light 2, Assassin's Creed Valhalla Ragnarok.
Series X
Final Fantasy XIII, Death's Door, Destiny 2 Witch Queen.
Switch
Traingle Strategy, Fire Emblem Three Houses and Eastward
Getting the house onto the market, so when I find time I'll be relaxing with some Planet Coaster, it's a lovely bit of stress relief that doesn't really ask much from you.
Spending the weekend playing some Cozy Grove and Stardew valley with some studying in between. Nice chill out.
Won't be gaming much today as I'm going to see The Book of Mormon this Afternoon and then out for food. Might fit in some Guilty Gear matches, made it to the 9th floor for an evening, earlier in the week so that was an achievement for me as I don't consider myself great at fighting games. Maybe continue playing GotG this weekend, just picked it up again after playing GG exclusively for the past month and met Cosmo.
Nice outside as well, so I think we will walk to the theatre later on so I can get a pint 😀.
Enjoy your weekend everyone!
@Mikey856 hope you have a quick recovery, never good when you have holidays and you get sick/injured.
@LN78 The first and second one are absolute treats. Have fun!
This weekend I will continue progressing through Batman Arkham City!
I will finally start Hollow Knight and also try FFX!!!
I finished Horizon Forbidden West last week but towards the end I was pretty much beelining the main story, so I've got a ton of optional quests still to do. The game looks even better with the most recent patch and I could see myself exploring and just casually do what comes in my way. I'm a sucker for world design and atmosphere and this game delivers it in spades.
Valkyria chronicles remastered and final fantasy 7 remake.watching resident evil welcome to racoon city.watching the nba Finals 🏀.its been fun.lets go Boston Celtics 💚.watching sitcoms comedy legendary. 📺 tv shows in in living color.good times.sanford and sons.saved by the bell and martin.word life.word to god.word to your mother.word is bond.word up son
@Shigurui Ah, Genshin Impact. Tempting to get back in but it is so damn addictive. I can spend endless hours grinding for that one artifact.
Swiping up stuff for the plat on Lego star wars, since doing that as a side thing I started Fist of the north star. A great RGG game. On my Xbox im still going through ff7, it feels pretty old in everything but still enjoying it nonetheless
I remember saying last weekend I would be playing other games on the side along the mammoth ELDEN RING to balance burn out, who was I kidding, it's been strictly ER and ER alone. What a game! I've hit 304hrs and it's still massive fun to play. I remember saying in 2015 that Bloodborne had the best gameplay, Witcher 3 had the story and Fallout 4 was just pure wacky fun. That engaging From Soft gameplay is still here and even bigger. Elden Ring is simply nothing I've ever played before. Been playing it completionist style, searching every nook and cranny since launch and it's still not getting boring. Masterpiece!
I’ve been playing Tribes of Midgard with my brother. Highly addictive! I’ve also just started Sable on my Laptop and it is stunning. Beautiful music, fantastic art direction and just a great game to chill out to.
Waiting for the PS+ revamp to give Guardians of the Galaxy and Stray a go.
240 hours in to Elden Ring.
I'm on the final stretch. Just two fights left to do and I'll be done. Then I'll go back to GT7 and Horizon for the weekend.
I just realised last night that I'm only missing 3 Trophies for the Elden Ring platinum.
@Col_McCafferty @JudgeDredd you’ve probably seen worse then no doubt lol. I am/was currently working towards GT7 platinum. Luckily the daily races feature Daytona which I can do one handed 👌🏻. And no I was putting some slabs down for a base for a summer house.
@MightyDemon82 thanks mate. Fingers crossed.. no wait
Death Stranding Director's Cut, first time playing it. This game is weird!
I'm now at the last chapter of Uncharted 4. Probably finish it this weekend. What an amazing game. One of my favorites ever
Tales of Arise, and maybe some BoxVR if my body recovers from the last session, lol.
Yesterday I reached chapter 7 in Celeste (PS4) so will try to motivate myself to make some progress with that.
Have a good weekend and happy gaming all.
Getting plenty of bang from my PS3! NBA 2K12 and Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection are on the menu with MGS Peace Walker and Siren: Blood Curse already installed and waiting. I put Horizon ZD on backburner as I started getting bored with it (my 2nd playthrough). I guess I really am fed up with open world games. Makes me hesitant to buy Forbidden West and Ghost of Tsushima. I'll probably never finish them.
It's a mix of games from me this weekend, as I'm playing The Stanley Parable, Bioshock 2, and Persona 4 Golden.
Last few menus in GT7, it’ll be in regular rotation anyway.
Beyond that I’m lost. Elden Ring left a hole in my gaming heart. Maybe some Ghostwire Tokyo, maybe Nobody Saves the World, maybe Outriders. Who knows. I’ve never played RE4, so I may finally dive into that classic on my PS5 since I know when the remake is coming. It’s basically the only mainline RE other than 6 I’ve never played.
Still making my way though Akiba’s Beat. It’s a pretty long game, but I’m enjoying it quite a bit.
Continuing Elden Ring PS4 edition via backwards compatibility on my PS5. Only got 9 days left on gamepass, will probably look to finish Life is Strange True Colours, only two chapters left.
Played SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated yesterday and completed a particularly hard stage, so I will continue today. I'm thinking of playing Astrobot too. Assassin's Creed Liberation and my sure weekend game, Horizon Forbidden West!! That's it!!
@Relygon - Heh, I know that only too well mate. Luckily I'm a Ganyu main so I had hundreds of Wanderer's Troupe to choose from just by killing world bosses. Did my fair share of Domain farming too though.
Got a bunch of characters I still need to build and farm for but my old team of Ganyu, Xiangling, Bennett and Zhongli are still holding up well so I'm just enjoying playing all the new (to me) story stuff. The grind can wait!
@dschons It's quite interesting that a few different people have each picked a different game from the trilogy as being the "weak link in the chain". I'm not sure if that's a good sign or a bad sign!
I'm still jumping between Guardians of the Galaxy and Trails in the Sky 3. Might hop into a few matches of SFV to celebrate SF6's awesome trailer!
@JudgeDredd it is a great track and yeah I also need the legendary trophy but I’ve only got the Ferrari 330 to get. I got my money from circuit experience mate, you get a million for gold on most tracks.
@LN78 For me, that's definitely 3 which is a shame because the story is super intriguing for the first few hours. But that gameplay loop killed it for me. 1 and 2 are among my favorite games. For 2 I have an extreme soft spot.
I've been playing "spot the moment assassins creed origins is about to crash to the ps5 home screen." Its not as much fun as it sounds..however i moved the game from my external hdd to the ps5 ssd and its a lot better..
I’m still playing Sniper Elite 5. This game is fantastic! I typically spend 2-3 hours in each map and make sure to do all stealth without anyone noticing bodies or getting into actual combat situations; and it is so rewarding. I love how the game provides organic discovery, particularly with its side objectives and unlocking new starting locations. It gives you a reason to explore every crevice of the map.
Moreover, I like how it embraces using stealth in creative ways rather than using subsonic ammunition. This is evident in the map, “Spy Academy” - an incredible achievement in level design, and really tests your ability for patience. For the first time in the series, I feel like I’m actually using my entire arsenal. Overall, I’m very satisfied with this game.
As an aside - I’m still playing a couple of backward compatible Xbox 360 games. I’m currently in the middle of Dante’s Inferno, and I find this to be an underrated gem. This game deserved better reception from critics - and I think it’s even better than God of War in some regards.
Another title I’m playing, although I played and beaten it when it first released, is Batman: Arkham Asylum. This is such a fantastic game. It oozes atmosphere, and I forgot how well it implements the Metroidvania genre in a relatively confided open world. In fact, I believe it reigns supreme over PS4’s Spider-Man.
Eiyuden Chronicle Rising: After watching SuperDerek RPGs impressions on the game I just had to pick up this game. The games visuals are gorgeous and I'm delightfully surprised that traversal and combat all feel well after my bad impressions when gameplay was first shown. I'm a stickler for town building, so fetch quests have never been a problem to me, I think the developers handled it well in those regards, so far every quest tells you where to find the specific item you need to complete a quest.
I finished Danganronpa V3 this week: I usually only beat one trial per week but after I beat the 5th trial I just had to find out how this game ended and pulled an all nighter finishing this game. Wow, just wow, this game was the literal perfect ending to what is the best Visual Novel series of all time. let's just say the story takes you to another "Dimension" and completely ends the series on a high, I can see how it would be divisive though. The ending is pretty conclusive but I can easily see Spike Chunsoft making a sequel if they choose so, but I will be honest in that I'd be fine if they move onto other series like A.I the Somnium Files which seems to be topping Danganronpa. These guys are honestly my favourite studio after Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio now. Hope anyone on the fence for this series decides to try it out after reading this, you won't regret it (also you have to play in order) !
Thanks for reading and have a good week😊😊😊
Unfortunately, I’ve got a busy weekend ahead having to work a second job of sorts. Nevertheless, maybe I can bridge some spirits with Kena or save some little sisters in BioShock 2. Probably won’t get much done of either, though.
Finishing up Life is Strange: True Colors. I just started the final chapter last night, so I should finish that up today (tomorrow at the latest). Still really enjoying it.
After that, I was planning on replaying Uncharted 4 via the Legacy of Thieves Collection, but now that the 60 FPS patch is out of Assassin's Creed Origins, I may go with that instead. I originally played it on Xbox, but never on PlayStation. The patch is the perfect excuse to replay it.
I decided to repurchase a disc of Driveclub, as felt like playing an arcade racer. Still had the DLC installed and retrieved my cloud save from 2015, the game is still a lot of fun. Also bought EDF Iron Rain on sale, seems OK, different to the Sandlot games, but still enjoyable.
@JamieO I would pick up the Wonderboy Collection but price is a bit steep, I feel it should include Master System version of Monster Land and the Dragon's Trap as standard, even in this limited digital release version. I might wait for a sale on that one.
@jdv95 Cabaret club is legit one of my favourite parts of the Yakuza games, it was pretty good in Kiwami 2's iteration as well, I love it when you get to the point where you learn every hand sign the girls make so you can get what they need without thinking, also a great way to earn money!
Picked up Spider-Man Miles Morales in Black Friday sale last year but just started it yesterday. Seems really cool so I’m looking forward to what’s ahead having not played the previous game.
Also playing through Tunic on my series X.
Really great game which PS owners will enjoy soon too.
@Shigurui Is Genshin completely playable F2P in your experience? I've been wanting to try a game that is laid back that I can relax to and listen to podcasts.
@GorosBat i like it aswell.
sitting on 40 mill just from the club lol.
it's kinda addicting.
iStunt 2 (Windows Phone) - Been enjoying in small bursts.
Dragon Mania Legends (Windows Phone) - Nearly completed the game now.
The Great Wobo Escape (Windows Phone) - Not enjoying this as much as I figured, but I'll still beat it anyways.
Playing on my new oled switch. Unless gofmd of war makes an appearance this year which I'm still doubtful of considering it's June & there's absolutely no new info let alone a release date I can't see my ps5 being used much. I'm getting the quarry next week & will get the new modern warfare but the ps5 store looks dry on new games. Hopefully next year is better. February was amazing but nothing after that
Hard mode in Bug Fables was kicking me in the balls during the 4th dungeon but I prevailed.
Now side quest bosses are, once again, kicking me in the balls. But just barely! I got them right down to single digit health but they get the better of me.
But it's fun!
If I get any time this weekend, I’ll be playing the Far Cry 6 gold edition I picked up in the recent Days of Play sale for 60% off. For $40 US, that’s a LOT of content!
@Tsushima all that in one weekend!? You're creating time my man
I’m knee deep in Japanese culture atm - I’m on my second play through of Ghost of Tsushima. Almost finished act 1, so I can then go to Iki island for the first time. The instantaneous loading on PS5 is incredible! Also playing Ghostwire Tokyo, which I only started last night.
Away from my PS5 (and Japan!) on my XSX I’m playing Sniper elite 5 and Ruined King.
The confirmation RE Village will be getting VR support made me play RE7 in VR again, to build up some personal hype in the wake of the awesome RE stuff that's inbound.. Until then i pretend that Village doesn't exist at all, lol.
@Recover20
It's Battle of the Backlog for sure but gaming is life
Cyberpunk 2077. Corpo rat playthrough.
The usual, King of Fighters 15 and WWE 2K22.
Death's Door, Citizen Sleeper and Forbidden West
On PS5, I’ll be continuing my first ever playthrough of God of War (2018) this weekend and should have it wrapped up by next weekend.
Ahead of my first holiday abroad in 14 years this summer, I’m also trying to get back into playing my Switch, so I will try the Mario Strikers Battle League demo today and finish off my debut run of SteamWorld Dig 2.
Have a great weekend everyone!
@Trousersnake definitely time for a replay for me as well. So good.
Been working through Rift Breaker but Apex Legends (Arenas) has recently hooked me HARD.
I've got a brand spanking new OLED TV arriving next week, so I'm putting off a lot of stuff until I get it. So probably just a bit of FIFA, or maybe properly starting Dark Souls 3 (the last of the Fromsoft Souls games I've got left to play)
Currently playing the Ezio collection as i had not played those 3 AC games before, it's still a treat (and i'm only on the first game so far, AC2).
Also have the last bits to wrap up of AC odyssey (last part of the atlantis
DLC), and i might check out the PS5 patch of Origins for a bit.
@GorosBat - Absolutely. The Gacha system is pure cancer but you can play and enjoy it fully F2P without ever opening your wallet.
Mobile --Diablo Immortal-- I am totally hooked on this game because it doesn't feel like a mobile game. Blizzard surprised me with this. I just defeated the Skeleton King and got my Demon Hunter to level 22.
More of the fantastic gt7,rdr2 and some fifa 22 ,it's great to have got fifa 22 on ps plus, happy gaming all:)
Super Perils of Baking, baby!
More horizon FW!!! Grabbing the third 'thing'. Had my PS5 exactly a week now. Absolutely love this game. Don't want it to end but at the same time I do because I can't wait to play rift apart. Is there anyway to check how long you've been playing a certain game with the PS5??
@NYJetsfan123
Yeah. Go to your icon at top of home screen then profile then games. Should have a list of most recent games and hours played.
Playing Sakura Wars this weekend. Already beat it so I’m doing trophy clean-up. I already platinum’ed Demon’s Souls, Seasons After Fall and Oxenfree this week. Would love to finish off a 4th
Umbrella & darkside chronicles
Still chipping away at Demon’s Souls. I managed to beat Flamelurker this morning on my first try. I was a bit worried about this boss as I heard it was one of the more difficult bosses. Absolutely loving it. One of the best games I’ve played in ages.
Yakuza like a dragon. It's mental but I'm really enjoying it.
Currently addicted to The Last of Us Part II having just completed the remaster of the original. I'm now playing as Abby. What a game!
I've been playing Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (PS4), just rescued Caterina from the Borgia prison.
@freddquadros Continuing our convo from last week, you said "Oh yes!!! Hogwarts Legacy is way better than I ever expected!! they put a lot of love in that game! A chance to deepdive in the Wizarding World!! I played Harry Potter 1 and 2 in PS1, and then couldn't find another game to play, but now I won't miss it!!
I agree wholeheartedly! Day 1 buy without a doubt, but I will probably wait a few months for them to iron out any bugs/glitches and add new features.
@astro911
Unforgettable experience, enjoy it mate. I remember playing it at launch, the minute it unlocked. I couldn't play and think about anything else for the week it took me to finish it (I took my time and explored as much as possible). Naughty Dog really are masters at their art.
Just started Watchdogs 2, been sat in the backlog for awhile. Still warming to it tbh but loving the setting and a good and varied soundtrack.
@NYJetsfan123 Yes, you can. On your profile page.
Finished Persona Q2 (3DS), even beat the Ultimate Boss. Now I'm replaying the first one mixed with some Dynasty Warriors 5.
Evil Dead: The Game. I am utterly addicted. Love this game to death.
Shanghai lockdown is over and I am out and about
Sniper Elite 5
Desmond is the ultimate assassin. sniper elite 5 and call of Cthulhu dark corners of the earth.
@gollumb82 Thanks mate! I was exactly the same as you when I played the original back in 2013 - I could barely put it down and part of me felt empty when it was all over. Up until then I don't think a game had ever had such an emotional impact on me.
To be honest I'm a bit of a wimp and usually avoid games with jump scares or horror like the plague! However, the human drama and gameplay in this series is just so engaging that I can't help but feel compelled to play and push through. Naughty Dog truly are on another level and I'm so grateful that this sequel exists. Can't wait for the TV series and will gladly buy the remake of the first game in a heartbeat if the rumours are indeed true!
Finally it’s time of Ghost of Tsushima!
The most beautiful, power, assassin game and not but least Katana world. I love it
I'm biased as Origins was my favorite last gen game and quite possibly my all-time pick, but it's a real beaut with the new patch.
@KidBoruto I usually do this with open world games, wait a few months, because they are very prone to bugs anyway. And, games are very expensive nowadays, so it's complicated to get a game day one. the last I did this was Horizon FW, to really explore my recent PS5 + 4K TV. Very worth.
@freddquadros Ah no to be clear, I am still definitely buying it day 1 at full price. I am just purposely going to wait a few months before touching it, so I can play it in the best state possible.
I've got plenty of games in my backlog so not like I'll be bored while waiting (not to mention a massive streaming/physical backlog of anime/cartoons/TV/movies etc).
