Fallout 4 has just received its long-awaited PS5 upgrade amidst the fervour conjured up by the Amazon Prime TV show. We’ve endured a little radiation to check out whether this native PS5 port has been worth the wait, and the results are mixed depending on who you ask.
You can check out our side-by-side comparison with some 4K footage over on the Push Square YouTube channel. We’d argue this is one of those “it’s better when you actually play it” upgrades, since movement and especially first-person gunplay feel far improved thanks to the smooth 60 frames-per-second in performance mode. However, if you’re looking for a massive graphical overhaul, then this ain’t it.
Admittedly, we do think the update looks sharper, although you’d be doing a fair amount of pixel-peeping if you were to hold two images up side-by-side. Regardless, it gives us more reason to jump back into Bethesda’s 2015 RPG, and you can expect our redux review to drop in the coming days.
Do you think Fallout 4 looks any better thanks to the PS5 upgrade? Let us know in the comments below.

Waste of resource as most of these things are on all consoles.
Why we all sit here for years waiting for some new big top quality AAA games to appear.
This has be the lowest year of gaming I can ever remember
It doesn't look much different if you ask me
That PS5 fence tho 😍😍😍😍 unnff
I suppose I'll just take the opportunity to plat again as a win.
I’ve downloaded it and it’s waiting but to be fair I wasn’t expecting a massive difference. Smoother and less bugs would do me fine.
I kinda sped through it years ago so taking my time this play through with a better frame rate and resolution sounds good. Also the TV show has really made me wanna play it more like quite everyone else.
If I've already got trophies for the PS4 version. Should they pop for the updated ps5 one?
60fps and native PS5 version is all wanted so i'm happy.
Really is a great example of how you can't polish a turd. It's a very ugly game and not because it's post-apocalyptic. I'm interested in playing it again because of the show but damn was I shocked when I played the PS4 version again recently - and I remembered it looking rough even at the time.
so its identical then?
@OldGamer999 Lowest year? Are we just pretending Tekken 8, Persona 3, Helldivers 2, FF7 Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, Princess Peach, Dragons Dogma 2, Balatro, Pacific Drive and many more didn't get released?
Remember when we used to get a new AAA game every week? Yeah me neither because that never happened. This year has been pretty solid so far and its not even May yet.
@DennisReynolds
Different tastes I guess
I have rise of the ronin and enjoying but it’s no big AAA.
I think more top notch. God of war, last of us 2, Mario Odyssey, tears of the kingdom.
Very top end AAA the best that gaming can offer.
Not games that are less than those games and get released sub par and some with technical issues.
@OldGamer999 Nothing that appeals you is very different from "lowest year of gaming". Between Dragon's Dogma 2 and Final Fantasy VII rebirth alone I don't have time for anything else and I'm no close to finishing either. And there's been a lot of other great releases like DennisReynolds just mentioned.
@DennisReynolds don't forget infinite wealth. what an absurd statement
@DennisReynolds I agree with this and in the case of AAA I barely play them anymore. Most of my gaming comes from the awesome indie titles available or AA games.
A lot of it depends on your genre likes and such as well. I'm still gutted that no big studio makes platformers anymore outside Nintendo. No car combat games, no arcade sports titles like the brilliant NBA street and not even a choice in regular sports anymore. I remember when you could buy FIFA or ISS or total football or Sega Worldwide Soccer, Actua Soccer. Very limited now. Sorry went off topic there.
But yeah to get back on point it's incredibly disingenuous to suggest this year so far has been bad. If you don't like the general or the game fine but for actual games worth buying in a general sense there has been loads. I'll add in HiFi Rush and the new dark souls cute crab game is meant to be pretty good as well. Good games from the indie sector and mainstream Devs so far.
@DennisReynolds I know it's been out a while on other consoles, but Dave the Diver too. I've been hooked on that game since it launched on PS Plus
@OldGamer999 How many God of War's, The Last of Us, Zelda's and more do we get in one year and within the first 4 months of a year?
@DennisReynolds None this year so far.
@OldGamer999 Mario Odyssey is fun but it was and still is one of the most mid 3d Mario games out there. And the fact that Nintendo took Mario with sombrero out of the cover because of offended white people when no one in Mexico was offended by it and actually most fans liked the idea made it even worst LOL.
What about load times?
Graphically it looks identical, but it does seem slightly smoother on ps5.
@OldGamer999 are you serious lol?
It looks much better and higher framerate is there... except the prologue in 2077 and in the vault. Framerate there is low even in performance mode (in quality mode almost unplayable) but as soon as you finish the prologue and get ot the open world, it runs smoothly and looks nice.
Playing in 60 fps was worth the upgrade, especially if you got it for free.
Sounds worse on PC from what I'm hearing. These games just have janky engines, let's hope with all this newfound attention they build something better for the future Instead of building on this old creaking thing
@DennisReynolds
Depends what’s releasing then, but I can’t see any for the rest of this year.
I don’t think Sony will be they sort of hinted that last year.
I don’t think Xbox have that zing to do it.
I don’t think Nintendo will this year unless they surprise us with switch 2.
But I’m hoping there will be, finders crossed.
@GymratAmarillo
What do you mean by offending white people
I have not read about this.
@Casco
Well I have sort of heard nothing but moans and groans about DD2 performance wise.
This site and the internet were full of complaints.
So to me that’s not good.
@OldGamer999 I get what you’re saying. Rebirth and Balatro are practically perfect, in my opinion, and Prince of Persia and Tekken were fantastic, but everything I’ve booted since Rebirth has been really… ok at best… for me. Dragon’s Dogma and Infinite Wealth didn’t click though I can see why others like them, I already knew Persona 3 wasn’t my cup of tea, and Pacific Drive and the other indies I’ve gotten just haven’t hit the spot. I’d like to try Helldivers, but all my friends had already jumped off of it by the time I finished Rebirth (which I did quite quickly too, mind you). Now, that said, I think we’ve had a solid couple months, and Dave the Diver has been fun to replay on PS so far, but the struggle for me is not knowing what is releasing. If games don’t hit, meh, on to the next one. This year’s problem isn’t the quality of the games, but the lack of news on what is coming. We don’t know anything for sure releasing this year after Hellblade for the most part and that’s the concern. I set up a calendar yearly and have the issue of overbudgeting my time months in advance, but this year… yeah, I have no idea what I’ll play next. I’ve not preordered a game yet this year, which is quite out of character for me, as I preordered Rebirth and Tekken months in advance. Great year so far, but poor year for transparency from the industry. I’d rather at least know some minor releases.
I've played ot on PC at max settings and it's not noticably different to what it was on PS4. I've just given the PS5 version a go and it's nice to have it much smoother, especially as my settlement is well over the build limit
I feel like I can see better shadows, like the orange awning on the left. Better fog down the street to the right. Better textures of the overgrowth above the poweline across the street to the left. All this on my phone, so I bet I'll notice it more on my 4K TV
Is it me or does this feel super dated due to the lighting alone? Ambient Occlusion and better shadows would make everything 200% better.
I hate how obsessed people are over graphics. I'll take 60 FPS and greatly improved load times any day of the week.
2024 the year of putting a dent into the back catalogue?
Game still sucks even if it looked like cyberpunk because you can't make your own character you're playing as Emil's character either daddy duties married guy or married woman with a kid.
Well I just put a couple hours or so in, pretty deep into the game save. With the necc mods it's a noticeable bump in framerate indoors, but in the open world it's less distinguishable from the 30 fps mode in terms of fluidity.
Aside from that, it's a 9 year old Bethesda title on an engine already archaic at the time. So temper your expectations, as aside from the framerate bump it's a barebones upgrade. Combat, movement, and visuals all janky/clunky as hell.
Make sure you due the graphical improvement mods to at least help somewhat. Enjoy exploring
The difference is in 60 fps
Would it not be worth mentioning if you have the game on PS+ the update isn't available as of yet
It can look exactly the same for all I care, as long as the upgrades are free and boost the FPS to 60fps i'm happy.
@OldGamer999 Not sure who this "we" is. AAA is practically an insult.
@DennisReynolds I think Tekken 8 is more of a negative sign of the times than a positive, my dude. But I definitely agree that this year has had some bangers. It's just not possible to keep up.
@Ashfordwasp I would say so if you import your save from ps4 in
I never played a Fallout game, so I really want to play this one. The only matter is free time. I'm stacked of games to play right now, and without too much time to do it. So, it will have to wait.
Bethesda as a developer appears to border on inept at times......
They do things you might expect of a AA scummy American studio outsourcing things to the cheapest bidder...... it really does get confusing.
Honestly wonder how much worse or better they worud be if they would clean house on the lead staff side........
Does it LOOK much better? No.
But this update was more about increasing the very uneven 30fps framerate to (hopefully) a stable 60fps. Plus a few other improvements. It's also free.
Looks exactly the same and zero dualsense engagement that I can discern. Kind of disappointing.
I will say it looks slightly more cleaner, a bit more crisper but 30 fps felt rough. Turning the camera around I was like "nope!"
@DennisReynolds
Tekken 8 - Hardcore niche title and not technically impressive
Persona 3 - great game, though a remake
Helldivers 2 - mid
FF7 Rebirth - Mid, remake.
Rise of the Ronin - bad game.
Stellar Blade - mid, nothing new. Redundant.
Princess Peach - ?
Balatro - ?
Dragons Dogma 2 - mid, technically poor
Pacific Drive - good indie game.
Not very impressive really. This generation has sucked and is bereft of creativity and originality. Pacific drive was refreshing, telling that it's a low budget indie game. It still had problems though - Injected identity politics and political organisation and no replay value.
@Terra_Custodes you sound fun
@Terra_Custodes That's your opinion and one i didn't ask for.
@daveofduncan nah I just have high standards, and find the current state of gaming poor. 90% of my games installed are last gen or updates of even older games. In my opinion the only truly standout game of this gen is Elden Ring and even that was hamstrung by keeping decade old last gen tech in mind for a PS4 version. There are "good" titles, but no other hits that "system seller" level (yes I know that's multi platform) for my money.
@DennisReynolds welcome to a public forum. You have no say in others reacting to your opinions ✌
@Terra_Custodes and i'm free to say your opinion is not shared by the majority and you're just wanting an excuse to moan and hate. You have nothing of worth to add to my original comment so sometimes its best you know don't bother 👍
@DennisReynolds you don't have any proof of what the majority think, and speak only for yourself. What an opinion means is always subjective.
The day that they sit down and fix the disgustingly high rate of bugs in the game will be the day that I pick this game back up. If I enjoy a game enough, it doesn't need to look better for me to play it. If a game is absolutely gorgeous, with thousands of bugs, it's trash.
@Terra_Custodes Reviews, steam reviews, MC scores, PS store ratings, Xbox store ratings and of course sales. I have way more to go on then you who clearly goes out of way to hate modern gaming because reasons, i mean come on dude you can't even praise Elden Ring without moaning about it. I'm sure Baldur's Gate 3 is "mid" as well as is Alan Wake 2 and such 🙄
Having widescreen support and ultra widescreen support was needed. 4k support is now native and much smoother textures and high framerate is an improvement. I had to lock my fps to 100 fps on the PC as that lipsynch is screwy above 100 fps. I also love Fallout games with over 300 hours in F4 so this update did all I needed. They added quests and enough goodies to make me return to the game world I enjoy.
Also, I am playing it on ps5 and PC. PS 5 seems cleaner to me..not sure why that is.
@Sequel they’ll build something better… a sales agenda for a Skyrim show so they can sell that again and again until Metallica starts blushing
I’m having a good time going through it again, as others have said. The update makes it less tiring on my eyes to deal with all the looting and tedium
