Topic: Disgaea 5 OT

This is a long shot, but anyone out there play this beast of a game?

@themcnoisy: yeah i brought it the same time i got tales of zestiria. only done the first chapter so far.

@themcnoisy: I definitely intend to pick it up at some point, but won't be until I have the free time to actually play it! Hoping to get into uni as a mature student next year, so I'll probably wait until then, as the long uni holidays are the only period I'd realistically ever get a chance to play it to it's fullest. Ditto Fallout 4!

No idea why this hasn't got perfect scores across the board. Its the perfect game.

You can access netherworld missions - similar to mgs v. You send a squad of peeps out to build their stats up. Absolutely brilliant for the lower end staff who used to rot during previous Disgaeas once the levels got tougher.

You can interrogate captured individuals Guantanamo Bay style, who will then join your ranks - destroy to gain stats - or make a part of your population.

There's squad screens - which allow access to all manner of new abilities depending on the amount of characters you having fighting from any particular squad.

You can even have a player character become a judge inside the dark court to get motions passed.

The only thing wrong - is the rudimentary graphics, far too pixelated. The powers and team moves look spectacular - pity the games made on such a low budget.

If you love stats you need this game - what a masterpiece. The story picks up pace, the characters are good fun and Seraphia (I've spelt that wrong but the lead female) is such a deluded power hungry bunny boiler, you cant fail to smile everytime she wraps up the levels. So unique. So stat heavy, so clever. Love this game.

Was playing through Disgaea 1 earlier in the year but got sidetracked, must get back to it as I was really digging it, have Disgaea 1-3 on the vita and plan to pick up 4+5 at some point, I'be read good things about this

@themcnoisy: I actually really like the visuals from what I've seen of it so far, thought it looks a lot "cleaner" than the previous entries on PS3 / Vita. Is it not quite as good looking in action then?

@SteveButler2210: Only played it a bit, the aesthetics are fine just the character models could do with being higher resolution imo. They all look pretty blury around the edges on my TV. Not sure why they couldn't have had sharper models.

I'm sure it looks fine on a Vita, though.

@SteveButler2210: @kyleforrester87: Kyles spot on. I don't mind the graphics - but certain moves or specials (especially when they zoom) look really pixelated. Its the only negative. Honestly go and buy the game its great.

@themcnoisy: Disgaea 3 and 4 on the Vita are in the latest lot of discounts starting today, so I'm picking up 4 and will see how I get on with it! Going to wait until I've finished Broken Age before starting it though.

@SteveButler2210: Nice - let me know what its like. Don't worry about playing Disgaea at the same time as other games - in fact that's how you should play it. The game should last you 2-3 years, its why I have the newer one. £35 or whatever I have paid is nothing compared to the 17 hours I've put in so far - and I'm only just passed chapter 3!! (although I have passed 50 levels in an item world to get a feel for the ai.)

@themcnoisy: Probably put in an hour or so so far, just polished off the tutorials haha. Liking what I've played though, the graphics look really nice on the Vita's screen, and I like how the gameplay, although far more complex, is also more fluid and fast paced than a lot of other TRPGs. When I played the first one it was my first TRPG, so that was something I didn't really appreciate properly, but having played quite a few since then you really notice the difference!

Some of the menus aren't entirely clear yet, but I'm sure that will come with time. Either way, it's a positive start and I'm pretty confident I'm going to have a lot of fun with this

@Hego: I would skip 1, 2 (there's 2 versions of 2) is better but I would just skip through to 5. There's 100 people battles late on in the game - compared to upto 28 characters you have on the earlier titles. I think 2 was a max of 20 or something so that's a game changer.

@themcnoisy: Likewise, I'm definitely getting 5 once I finish this. Played through to the second chapter/episode yesterday and I'm loving it! The humor is definitely a high point, as it's not often a game has me laughing out loud (except Tales from the Borderlands - that was consistently hilarious).

The only thing I would change is the character / class system. I hate that to get a new class you have to start a new character and build them from the ground up - it seems needlessly limiting and has led to me just sticking to the characters you're given by default so far. When it comes to different character / classes, I far prefer systems like FFT where you can swap classes on the same character without resetting their level, and can actually learn commands to use from one character class while playing as another.

That said, the rest of the gameplay is stellar, and I'm sure I'll get over that once I'm used to it. I just need to be more of a decisive gamer - I like flexible class systems because they mean I don't have to commit!

You can on D5, they learn sub classes. So a warrior can sub to a mage etc etc.

I've levelled a glove to level 80 last night - wish I nvr started it at this point in the game. I've literally been in the same item world for 4 hours!!!

@themcnoisy: ah ok, maybe you can in D4 and I've just not worked out how to yet! To be fair I've not really looked too hard at the character creation yet, more focussing on the development of the main chars they give you.

Haha god I think that seems to be the danger with these games, if you're not careful you could spend forever developing an item, only to then find something that totally outclasses it further down the line!

My plan is to try and focus on completing the story, and then wait until the post-game to really dive into the nitty gritty of things like the item world and the character world.

@themcnoisy: Would never have even thought about this series but you've mentioned it a few times so I'm thinking off picking up D4 on the Vita? Is the games combat etc pretty easy to pick up? It all looks quite unique and the only turn based combat game I've ever played is Child of Light (oh and Pokemon)

@mrobinson91: Its turn based gameplay is fun. D4 was a tenner at one point. Obviously D5 will set you back more.

Luckily its one of the few games were you will dip in and out of throughout a whole gen - just because you want to.

@themcnoisy: as a turn based novice, is it a really difficult game or can it be picked up quite easy? I'll probably get D4 as I'm just about to get a vita and looks like a good game for it.
