Managed to play for about an hour or so last night and absolutely love it. Get the feeling I'm going to get VERY confused once I open up more of the map though. Starting to get a few branching options now. Tempted to look up a guide to understand some of the core mechanics, as I have no idea if the stuff I'm picking up is used for upgrades, opening doors, etc. But then discovering that is part of the fun so might just keep at it and hope all becomes clear at some point. The art style and soundtrack are sublime, and the combat feels well-constructed. Tough as old boots though, got caught out by the first few ambush-style confrontations with loads of enemies, where you really have to start dodging to survive.
Also really love the way NPCs talk to you through pictures rather than words - cryptic, beautiful and deeply expressive all at the same time. Awesome.
@SegaBlueSky: The upgrade system is pretty easy to understand really, it'll make sense once you've picked up a few more of the gold boxes. The multidash ability is great, you need to time your button presses though and not just mash X. The game looks pretty big but I reckon it'll be a 7-10 hour experience (I read that people can speed run it in under an hour!). I've made a decent chunk of progress but I've actually yet to see a boss :S Keep getting lost, which would normally be frustrating, but not when the game looks and sounds this good.
@kyleforrester87: Ah, so that's what the little gold boxes are for! Think I collected four of them last night but wasn't clear what it did. I went east from the central hub area, following the little dog, and it seems to be working out so far! Haven't run into any bosses yet either but opening up new areas all the time so must be doing something right. And yeah totally with you on the getting lost bit, really curious to find out more about these huge giants and what happened to them. Sometimes wish I could zoom out to see the bigger picture as the landscapes are just so ridiculously beautiful!
I really want this game, looks brilliant. It's a shame that the hype it had disappeared somewhat, because it looks like a game that deserves lots of the stuff. I want to get it as soon as possible. The game's graphical style and musical direction seems fantastic and the gameplay looks fantastic.

@Speedy67: I think with it being released on PC a few months ago there isn't much noise on general gaming sites about the PS4/XB1 versions since they already covered it back then. Also, reviews for the PC version were mostly good but not amazing - most criticising the difficulty. There is going to be (and is already on PC) a certain audience who'll love it though.
I'm a little further than yesterday and I can definitely confirm the difficulty. I went up north in the beginning and I'm now fighting the boss. I'm already stuck for 30 mins, I do get better every time I die though, so there's some progression at least. Just like Xeodrifter, there's a pretty steep difficulty curve near the beginning, but once you master the relatively easy controls, it actually becomes doable, but still very challenging.
@kyleforrester87: Yeah, and I think I'm part of that audience. I would have loved it if Hyper Light Drifter was made available on Playstation Plus next month. Would have been a good move because it would make a lot of users happy and would have brought attention back onto the game. Also, I have no money, so I wanted to be free!

I went north first and beat the boss after about 10 attempts (warp upgrade is a must, the sword spin ability helped cause some decent damage). I went east after and stomped the boss without even needing a health pack :s the game is kind of tough but it's not as hard as i thought it would be, at least so far. Feels about right to be fair. I do like that you don't suffer damage just from touching enemies, they have to actually be attacking you to take hit points off.
@kyleforrester87: You're a little further than I am. I finally beat the boss by buying a second health pack and the bombs (although they weren't that useful in the end..). Made my way to the east and I skipped the ''3-triangle'' door as I figured that it would lead me to the boss. I explored more of the area and I'm about to enter the boss dungeon. Here's hoping he's as easy for me as he was for you.
@kyleforrester87: The map isn't very accurate. The entire map is separated in numerous 'sections' (as only a part of the map is loaded at any given time) and it your character icon only shows in what section of the map you are. The underground map works the same, but it's a bit more useful. I only use the map for general directions, everything else is done by memory!
I think the east area was pretty straight forward, there was only one path to take until the cutscene with the dog. From there you either had the choice to enter the boss dungeon on the right and the northern part of the map was accesible by the dungeon on the left.
It definitely helps to take a lot of mental notes of the environment, as I too had quickly discovered that the map wasn't very useful.
@Octane: yeah that's what I figured with the map eventually, I guess. Suprised you didn't have any problems with navigating the eastern areas though, took me a while to pull up 4 of those things..
I was just being a bit crap I think haha. I on the last section now, need to raise 2 more things. Already beat the boss in that area. Really like the final zone, it's very cool.
It seems like you need 4 purple bits per zone, and then there are 4 optional bits aswell? I wonder what you get for the optional bits..
Started Hyper Light Drifter this afternoon and have gone through the east and north sections, and started the west. Loving it so far. I think the difficulty and combat are perfectly pitched, to be honest. In the review, Graham speaks about there being no superfluous features, and I have to agree - it's an incredibly cohesive, tightly designed game.
After getting the four purple triangles in the east, I had trouble relocating the door that needed four to unlock. I think my only criticism is the ambiguous map. Aesthetically it's nice but not super useful!
