@Thrillho Good to know! The reason why I'm even considering this is because I was this close to buying a PS5 a couple of weeks ago since an online store in Sweden got some in stock and I was very tempted to buy one. I have most of my last-gen games on PS4 anyway so it would make more sense to invest in PS5, at least until my backlog starts to drastically shrink that is.

@JohnnyShoulder Yeah that makes sense. Hopefully though I'll be lucky enough and get more good months than bad ones over the course of the coming year, lol.

Th3solution

@LtSarge Iโ€™ll just chime in and say I echo the sentiments already given. For that price, PS+ is a no-brainer to get. I think โ‚ฌ60 a year is a good deal, so โ‚ฌ30 is definitely a steal. I can almost guarantee there will be at least 2 or 3 games youโ€™ll play from it over the next 12 months, and probably much more. Then the cloud saves and the occasional discounts, like the guys said. I almost never play online either, but find the service well worth it. And it is nice to at least have the option to play online if for some reason you get the itch to play some online matches of COD or Tetris Effectโ€™s new online mode or Ghost of Tsushima Legends mode or Naughty Dogโ€™s new online game coming out, etc, etc.

But I agree, the current month is one of the weakest months in recent history so wait and see what the Sept games are. But if the offer ends at the end of August then youโ€™ll have to have your first monthโ€™s games be Hunterโ€™s Arena, Plants v Zombies, and Tennis. Yuck. But there is usually at least one game I have minor curiosity with, and often a game that I was going to buy anyways. I reckon I will play one of the PSPlus games about once every 3 months, so thatโ€™s 4 per year. But we all know what a slow gamer I am.
It stings a little when the some of the games offered are ones you just bought recently, but thatโ€™s the risk you run.

If youโ€™ve not looked at the PS Plus collection catalogue, its here : https://www.pushsquare.com/guides/all-ps-plus-collection-game...
But unfortunately you canโ€™t access the games until you get your PS5, even though the games are all PS4 games. But still, if you get at PS5 in the next couple months (which I definitely recommend also), then you probably have 2 or 3 at least from that library to play.

LtSarge

@Th3solution Those are all excellent points. Considering how many games I play on PS4, there is a high probability that I might run into a mode that I want to play but that I need PS+ for. But yeah, I think it's a good idea to wait and see if at least one of my first months will be a good one just to get a good start to the subscription, you know? I'm guessing Sony will announce the next titles next week so I won't have to wait long to find out.

It kinda sucks that you can't get access to the PS+ collection on PS4, but I guess it makes sense to have it only on PS5 in order to entice people to buy one.

LtSarge

Th3solution

@LtSarge Yeah, the PS Plus Collection certainly seems to be a tactic to entice people new to the platform, or even old PS fans, to take the plunge with a PS5. I really wish Nintendo did something similar with the Switch. As someone who is new to the Nintendo platform, Iโ€™d jump at the chance to buy a Switch and join a service like this for $30-60 a year that gave me an instant collection of the 20 of the platformโ€™s older greatest hits (first, second, and third party titles) and also gave me 3 new games per month. (Not to mention some of the Play at Home free games, which was even more icing on the cake and it didnโ€™t even require PS Plus). It would make joining a new console less intimidating.

The way the PS Plus Collection works is that you can only claim the games from a PS5, but once they are claimed from the collection and into your library, they can be played on your PS4, and they are essentially yours to keep as long as you keep an active Plus membership. So I think that itโ€™s possible to log into a PS5, claim the games into your library, then log out and the games are still yours. So you could buy a PS5, log in, claim the games, then clear out the console and resell it and then just keep using your PS4 with the new 20 games all added to your library! Or if you know someone with a PS5, I guess you could use their console to log in and claim them (although it might have to be designated as your primary console, Iโ€™m not sure.) then just play them all at home on your PS4.
Of course my advice is get a PS5 and keep it and enjoy the glory of all that it offers! ๐Ÿ˜„. Itโ€™s an investment for sure, but a great console, especially if you have a 4K TV.

โ€œWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.โ€

LtSarge

@Th3solution Well I mean, Nintendo technically already offers an instant collection that consists of 100 NES/SNES games and you only need to pay โ‚ฌ20 for an entire year to enjoy these games and you also get access to online multiplayer. They also add more games every now and then, but those are definitely not appealing at all. However, if you haven't played older Nintendo games like Super Mario World, Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, the Donkey Kong Country trilogy and more, then this could be a good opportunity to finally experience those games. But I wouldn't buy a Switch solely to play NES/SNES games, so if you're also interested in playing other Switch titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, then those retro games would definitely be a decent icing on the cake.

Yeah I don't think I'd want to go to such lengths just to play some PS4 games, lol. I'll happily wait to experience them whenever I buy a PS5. I just don't feel like there's much reason for me to buy a PS5 now. A lot of upcoming PlayStation exclusives like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War 2 are coming to PS4 as well and considering they're first-party titles, I can definitely see them running decently on a base PS4. They would naturally run better on PS5, but I don't think they'll run poorly on a base PS4. I played a bit of The Last of Us Part II last year and it ran wonderfully on my base PS4. I think PlayStation developers all share the same philosophy of delivering great experiences no matter which system you own.

LtSarge

Th3solution

@LtSarge Now that you mention it, I do recall seeing the Nintendo classic collection a little while ago when I was considering joining the console. Nothing really captured my interest from the collection but Iโ€™m sure if I tried some of them Iโ€™d end up really liking and appreciating them. But yes, Iโ€™d mostly like to try out Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, Donkey Kong Country, Octopath Traveller, Xenoblade Chronicles, Bayonetta 2, Fire Emblems, and even have a shot at multi-platform titles on the go like Celeste, Demonโ€™s Souls, Doom, Witcher 3, etc to see if I like played them handheld. I can play these much cheaper on PS4/5 but it would be great to try them on the small screen.

And the PS4 definitely still has a lot of life in it. Itโ€™s no rush to join the PS5 club, since basically all there are now as far as first party games exclusive to the PS5 are R&C, Returnal, and Demonโ€™s Souls (which can technically be played on PS3 ๐Ÿ˜›). So I do think itโ€™s a great investment if you have the money and good fortune to find one but the PS4 is still booming.

LtSarge

@Th3solution Yeah the Switch has a lot of great games so now is definitely a good time to get one. Or maybe you'd rather wait to get the Switch OLED instead, which would be a good idea. But yes, having a Switch will make you think carefully which system you want to buy a game for. The game might run and look better on PS4, but it might be more convenient to play it on the go. JRPGs especially are an easy choice in this case. We talked about Persona 5 Strikers a few days ago, and even though it's not a traditional Persona game, it definitely felt great to play on a handheld. It just feels more convenient to play on a handheld device rather than turning on your TV and waiting for the game to boot up.

I'm actually hoping that by the time PS5 starts getting more next-gen only games that a PS5 Pro will come out. I don't know when you bought your PS4, but I got mine in 2014 and it wasn't until 2017 when we finally got a wave of next-gen experiences. Horizon Zero Dawn, NieR: Automata, Persona 5, Yakuza and so on. That was such a great year and in hindsight, I should've probably waited until 2017 to buy a PS4 Pro instead because it came out around the same time as all these games. So I'm thinking that I should do that now with PS5 and wait until like 2023-2024 and buy the inevitable Pro model.

@LtSarge I wouldn't hold out for a Pro model for the PS5. One of the reasons the Pro and X models came out last gen was that 4K was becoming really popular, so they needed consoles that could handle at least 'fake' 4k . There isn't anything I forcee that they can bolt on this time round, as 8K won't anywhere near as popular as 4K was when the Pro and X came out.

The only thing I've heard rumours of is that it could have more RAM and storage, but that would mean the price would be significantly more expensive than the current model.

@LtSarge I bought the PS4 at launch and really the first few games on PS4 I played were Resogun, which got ported back to PS3 eventually (but is still an excellent game), and Assassinโ€™s Creed Black Flag, which was cross-gen, and Infamous Second Son, which was quite good. But otherwise, most of early 2014 was spent playing the late gen PS3 games, like Borderlands 2, Dragonโ€™s Dogma Dark Arisen, Puppeteer, BioShock Infinite, and of course The Last of Us. Eventually I started to abandon my PS3 backlog and focus on only PS4 games by late 2014 or early 2015. There was a lack of killer apps outside of Infamous during that first year. For me, PS4 really came into its own with MGS Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain in 2015, which I had forgotten was cross-gen also with PS3.

So honestly, youโ€™re probably right, in that youโ€™ll have a few PS5 exclusives that will elude you until you get one, but most of the big titles will be available. The big difference maker this gen is backwards compatibility though, so you can essentially use your PS5 as a better PS4 Pro. But there is definitely no rush.

LtSarge

@JohnnyShoulder Ah, okay. Well either way, I will be buying a PS5 eventually whether it's the current model or a newer one. What matters the most for me is the games and I just know that there will be one of those years where PS5 is going to see a lot of great titles come out and that's when I want to get one.

@Th3solution Now that I think about it, 2015 was a pretty good year all things considered. There was MGSV as you mentioned but also Witcher 3, Batman Arkham Knight, Bloodborne and more. I honestly don't remember why I didn't get any of those games when they came out in 2015, lol. So maybe I don't have to wait that long at all, 2022 could actually be that year when a bunch of great next-gen only titles are coming out.

Wait, I just realised that 2022 is next year, lol. Man, time sure does fly!

I had a scary moment today where I had to unplug my PS4 because it froze. Luckily I didn't have to restore the system or anything but I decided to bite the bullet and upload all my saves to the cloud just incase it happens again. I never thought I'd use it because I'd prefer a physical back up but I'm just too damned lazy to actually make one ๐Ÿ˜…

I sort of got a bit bored of playing games I actually want to play and fancied some punishment so I went back to my list to tick off some PS Plus games. Im feeling pretty apathetic this week and I've deliberately chosen multiplayer games that I won't be interested in to have a quick go on so I can just tick them off. So yeah, my reviews won't be long and they might even be harsh but it really is a "it's not you, it's me" thing because they aren't the sort of games I'd like anyway. I thought I'd post my brief thoughts on these games in this thread because Ive sort of moved away from the PS3 Section of my spreadsheet. I also might not try and make up ratings for these games because of how apathetic I'm feeling. Not sure, maybe some will get one.

Exile's End (ps Vita) - I actually started playing this a few months ago but never wrote anything about it because I intended to finish it. It's a metroidvania where you start off throwing rocks at snakes. I probably did about half of the game but I've had no real desire to revisit it so I am going to call time on it. It seems like it could be cool, if it's your thing. It's not really my thing. It's ok, not terrible, not great and pretty much uninspiring enough for me to not bother finishing. Rating = B for Bland.

Disc Jam (PS4) - this has been installed on my PS4 since it came out because I intended to give it a proper go one day as it was touted as "the next Rocket League". I'm glad I played it this week because I think I would have been frustrated with it if I'd actually tried to play it properly.

It's OK. I did basic training and about half of the advanced training. I couldn't execute one of the moves with any great reliability so I decided to quit and just head online. I found some games easily when I made my search criteria unfussy.

I do think this game could be quite good if you can be bothered to put the time into it. I would say it's not as easily attractive in the opening period of playtime as rocket league but I can see it being as fun and in depth once you learn the skills. But yeah, I'm glad that I won't be putting any more time into it. Rating = NtNRL for Not the Next Rocket League

Edit: just to clarify, this is a frisbee game where you throw frisbees at eachother. I guess it's like a mix of tennis and football but you use a frisbee

Laser League (PS4) - this actually has quite a positive review on push Square. I played the tutorials. I tried playing online but couldn't find a match. I played against a bot who beat me. I fancied checking out the different arenas but couldn't be bothered in the end. The load times were a bit long considering what the game actually is. Rating CBB for can't be bothered (that might be a repeat rating from my PS3 reviews)

Hunter's Arena: Legends (PS4) - not really my thing. I did the tutorial area, then I played as a panda in a battle royale mode. Then I tried one on one tag battle. Then I tried battle royale as a team. All game modes bored me to tears. The sound effects sound like they are from Turok on the N64. Unfortunately this game lacks the charm of Turok and the fact that it isn't Turok. With the greatest respect, I will award this game a Rating = NMT for not my thing

@Th3solution haha, can't tell if sarcastic or not but sarcasm isn't usually your bag so I will assume not ๐Ÿ˜‚. Thanks for reading, my apologies that they are not as entertaining as my previous reviews. I know you haven't said they're not as entertaining but I can sort of tell they're not because they haven't made me laugh as much!

I'm probably going to start treading more familiar ground for people now as I move past the obscurity of PS3's first party indie scene (I realise that's an oxymoron but it somehow remains accurate). But yeah, hopefully I don't upset anyone by taking a doodoo on a game they might actually have played and enjoyed!

(My arena legends hunters review made me laugh a bit actually but don't let my review put anyone off, I'm sure it will have a fan base. I'm just not part of it!)

See ya!

Th3solution

@ralphdibny Well, the sentiment is purely genuine but yes, I was acting all magnanimous in a tongue-in-cheek way. ๐Ÿ˜… I enjoy your mini reviews. I especially like the rating systems. I hope my sarcasm didnโ€™t offend. ๐Ÿ˜„

But I was honestly wanting to hear from someone who played Hunterโ€™s Arena. I think I posted the question somewhere around here asking for some feedback to see whether it was a game worth looking into and no one piped up. I assumed that meant the game was DOA and no one was playing it. Were the servers full? I kinda like the art style and character design. It seems less Fortnitey than the other BR and F2P online games. But your mini review is exactly what I need to prompt me to avoid the temptation of wasting even the little bit of time, energy, and bandwidth to download the piece of rubbish.

@Th3solution haha yeah I figured that you didn't consult the cabal of the Push Square Illuminati before speaking on behalf of them ๐Ÿ˜….

I think in terms of Hunters legends arena (I really can't remember what it's called, it's just 3 random words that could be said in any order), I think the best way to tell if you like it is to just download it and play it. If you claimed it, that is. It's not really my thing so I can't comment on how good it is. I'd imagine if you weren't looking to play with friends anyway, then there's no harm in just downloading it and giving it a try. You'll quickly know whether it's worth any more of your time! It took me less than half an hour to decide that it wasn't for me ๐Ÿ˜…. (PlayerUnknowns battlegrounds review incoming, and that took me less than 5 minutes to decide ๐Ÿ˜‚)

I'm trying to think about what arena Hunters legends reminds me of. It's not like a shooting game, it's like a melee combat game I guess but more hacknslash style than Arkham. Even then, that's not an accurate description. It's the sort of game where you hit stuff and then numbers appear around the thing your hitting. Is that like an RPG thing? Maybe it's like a battle royale but it kind of plays and looks like a really light Action RPG

See ya!

ralphdibny

Ok bear with me here, it's clear that I don't like either battle royale games or sports. So please don't be offended if I insult your favourite game or sport!!

Tennis World Tour 2 (PS4) - it is tennis. The first thing that happens when you open the game is that it forces you to sit through a tutorial of how the card game mechanics work. I didn't know there was a crossover between sports fans and board game fans but aparently there is. You aren't forced to do the tutorial on how to play tennis, which you know, you'd think would be more important in a tennis game. I found it in the menu and did it anyway.

What I mainly remember about tennis as a kid, was hitting a ball against the wall. Then my mum shouting at me for knocking either the render or the pebble dashing down off the side of my house. Whichever building finish was popular at the time in the 90s UK suburbs.

Tennis probably one of the more fun sports to play in real life and it translates well into games. I quite like Wii Tennis and I also vaguely remember playing Anna Kournikova's Tennis on PS1 as a kid. The tennis in this game is OK. It's not awful but it's not something I am going to sink a reasonable amount of time into. The card game thing is confusing but doesn't seem as stupid as the card game stuff that is in EA sports games. It reminds me of the cards in Star Wars Battlefront because it's like skills during the match. Why do games have cards in anyway, is the game it's based on not good enough to play by itself?

I played on a few interesting courts. I don't think there's many real courts in the game but there seems to be analogues. I played on supreme court in the UK which I guess is supposed to be Wimbledon, don't know. I tried different floorings too like grass, wood, carpet and hard. I never won a single tennis battle. I maybe kept up about 2 or 3 rallies. Doubles is easier than singles. Rating= BoaD for bit of a Djok(avitch)

Just to add, I've heard of the following tennis players, Raphael Nadal, novak Djokavich, Roger Federer and Andy Murray who is paid DLC in this game. I've also heard of John Mackeral (McEnroe), Tin Henman (Tim), the Venus and serana Williams sisters and the PlayStation 1 mascot Anna kournikova

PUBG (Test Server) (PS4) - I don't know what I was expecting as I guess the game was tested long ago but this game didn't work. Click "Hide Content Item" in your PS4 library to tidy it up a bit because this is a pointless 40gb icon. Rating= PUBG for Pointless Unknown Battlegrounds

PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds (PS4) - I've actually played this before briefly on Xbox for a rewards quest. It sucks. I don't even know why I downloaded it to PS4, I guess to see if there was anything more to it? Well I loaded into a game and had no guns and died immediately. Close Application, Delete, Hide From Library. Rating = S for stupid

Edit: Wait, I'm so confused. The PS4 says the game is called PUBG: Battlegrounds so is it called PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds: Battlegrounds???

MLB The Show 19 (PS4) - this game is baseball which is a bit like American Cricket. I don't understand regular cricket let alone American Cricket. I did some tutorials then I played a game in an outdoor stadium. Twenty minutes later, I decided to look up how long a game of baseball takes in MLB The Show 19. 45 mins to an hour. I quit my match and then started a new one in an indoor stadium. I played that for about ten minutes, then I closed the game and deleted it.

I mean yeah, if you like baseball then this might be good. Unfortunately I know nothing about it except Daryl Strawberry and Mr Burns not knowing what sideburns are, which is a funny episode of the Simpsons but not indicative of Baseball on the whole.

It was quite nice to see some American locations, like the big arch thing in St Louis that I've seen before in some trash TV show called Defiance. I think I would have preferred this game if it was a bit simpler but I'm obviously not the target audience anyway. Rating= B for Balls
