Honestly getting quite excited for this now. I've watched about ten minutes of footage and that was enough to confirm to myself that I'm buying it, as if I didn't know that already.
Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.
Well after seeing some gameplay and reading a couple of preview pieces I've completely succumbed to the hype train and preordered! Shooting magic bolts on horseback just has to be tried. From a consumer perspective, there seems to be a real faith in the product, they seem keen to put it in as many hands as possible a couple of months before release. I rarely buy games at launch but can't wait to see what this is like on ps5!
Played the demo for Elden Ring. The frame rate is expectedly woeful with the game actually properly stuttering during a boss fight, which is impressive given the graphics are fairly disappointing too, with some of the worst anti-aliasing I’ve seen in a long time. Of course, the gameplay is more important here and on that side of things, it’s essentially Dark Souls 3 with an unbelievably janky jump button. I can’t tell if it would be a good thing or not to never make you rely on the jumping. On the one hand, it feels horrible and platforming sections would just not feel good at all. But then I can’t exactly find much of a conceivable use for the jumping unless they make you use it specifically for some areas. Coming off Sekiro, which actually had alright movement, it’s a bit disappointing. The horse is just a fast version of the playable character, feels nothing like riding a horse other than giving you left and right sided attacks. So yeah, that’s the negatives out the way, slightly more than I was hoping for.
Mobs are decent though, some good variation in the opening areas and interesting combinations. Nice to see proper ballista enemies back. The open world is very much a split for me. A lot of it is utterly pointless fodder for you to ride through and ignore. However, I really like the clearly designed areas with treasure chests. It feels a lot like Mortal Shell, a game I thought had lots of potential but was let down by the combat and checkpoints. One massive positive I can say for Elden Ring is that the checkpointing is both generous and feels very very fair. I quite like being able to equip a magic attack as part of a big stabby sword as well despite never bothering with magic in these games. Infinite stamina outside of combat is a godsend too. A boss that I won’t spoil is bloody hard too but feels like the main game with my own build up would make it a good one.
So yeah, a very mixed bag but it’s a network test and perhaps that’s to be expected. Technical side of things it’s a mess, could be fixed by February. Gameplay wise, it’s built on solid foundations but with a couple of somewhat dubious additions that look better in trailers than they actually feel to play. I’ll play the full game especially since it’s priced reasonably.
@nessisonett Thanks for sharing that, confirms my fears and suspicions about traversing the open-world. Do you know on what grounds you were selected to play the closed network test? Did you utilise any of the multiplayer features?
@TheBrandedSwordsman I just applied for it and was lucky I guess! The multiplayer features just outright didn’t work when I tried, none of the summon signs worked and I couldn’t invade either so I put that down to the servers being all over the place as it’s a network test after all! The game does play well but I do think that’s down to the Dark Souls 3 elements than the new ones. The main thing I hope is better in the full game is the little dungeons in the open world, they’re just a bit rubbish. Every one I went into was just a couple corridors with a few enemies and a chest at the end. Really hope there are more interesting ones elsewhere in the map.
@nessisonett Would you say someone who has completed Dark Souls 3 more than once doesn't stand to gain much from playing Elden Ring then? N.B I think the boss you are referring to is Margit the Fell Omen, the one with the scorpion tail is that correct? I assume you took it down in the end? You could still customize your build a little within the demo right? Leveling up and whatnot. No time for rune (soul) - farming though obviously, so maybe that's what you were referring to?
I seem to remember the network test for Dark Souls 3 being in a similar state that seemed to be ok when it launched, so personally I'm not concerned with reports of things being iffy.
I know some people around the Web will compare this to something like Cyberpunk, but the circumstances are very different as FromSoftware have kept mainly the same core team together and not have a huge uptick in recruitment, so I'm confident they will be able deliver when the game launches. Not to say it's gonna be perfect on release, but not many games are these days.
@TheBrandedSwordsman Yeah, that’s the boss and it was indeed a very good one. You could of course level up in the demo but there’s no way you could make any meaningful differences with the time that you had and the low levelled enemies giving you barely any runes. I’d definitely say you’d get something out of it if you’ve played Dark Souls 3, it’s a new game after all and while it’s 100% just Dark Souls 4, there’s enough there that you should really think about buying it.
... Yeah okay now there's finally some ACTUAL footage out there of what the game is like with it's open world nature I'm actually interested in it quite a bit.
So much so I returned to Dark Souls Remastered and beat it, am now partway through 2 with the intention of going through 3 as well.
I'm probably not gonna get Elden til I get a PS5 so I'll be avoiding this topic like the plague going forward but it's nice to finally get some hype for the title after actually seeing it action rather then small snippets and being told about it

@colonelkilgore Did you see the recent quotes from the recent Miyazaki-san interview where he talks about the game a bit more? He said he probably won't play it because there won't be any unknowns for him going in, he already knows how every piece of the puzzle fits together, it's personal policy for him not to play his own games, but he also said, if he did play it, it'd probably his ideal game and a culmination of what FromSoft were doing in Dark Souls and their other games.
"(Music is) a purposeless play. This play, however, is an affirmation of life" (paraphrased) - John Cage
@TheBrandedSwordsman yeah I did hear something to that effect… it makes sense to me tbh. After pouring your heart and soul into something for 4 years or so, the only real satisfaction you could get from it is listening to the fans gush.
Funnily enough though, I’d pay money to watch Miyazaki play non-From souls-likes… I think that’d be really interesting.
@colonelkilgore Some more info for you here, avoid if you don't want a description of a boss that hasn't been described before. Let me know what you think, if you read.
