Full price: Anthem [I waited so long for the 2.0 update but we know how that ended so...]
On sale: Bloodborne [Won't get into details but those who see FromSoft differently will understand why]
Runner up games: Werewolf The Apocalypse - Earthblood, Dying Light, Darksiders III.
There are more, but these immediately come to mind.
Edit: Forgot to add Elex. Probably the worst game I ever played in my life. And to think they didn't even bother to revamp the combat in the sequel shows how the devs literally copy-pasted the thing.
There isn't a proper tutorial, it's basically FIGURE IT OUT, YOU PEASANT!
Terrible UI (in my opinion) and I don't like how convoluted the leveling system is. The Surge 2 has a straightforward system and that's a AA game.
My last reason would be the non-existent story. Like, I felt no desire to "push through" the difficulty because there was simply no narrative to, you know, guide me. It's another thing when you, for example, have a story of a little girl that is in danger and she calling out to you.
@Fragile I do think FromSoft has responded to some of those complaints @Divergent95 listed. Apparently the tutorial issue in the second bullet point is actually much better in Elden Ring compared to the earlier titles and the game does teach and tutor much better than before. Also I’m guessing they’ve addressed the fourth point (lack of story) by hiring GRR Martin, although I’m not sure how much good it’s done. But you’re right that the core of their games certainly sounds like has been maintained undiluted.

Another one for me was Breath of the Wild. As a long time Zelda fan I could not wait to play this game. Instead of a glorious Zelda game in the vein of OoT or other 3D Zeldas, I instead got a soulless Zelda Game that thought it was Skyrim. Add to that the constant needing to carry 100 weapons on you because of your weapon breaking on you everything, no thank you. Ended up trading that one in really quick.

Anything by FromSoftware...Sacrilege! I hear you shout! But I’m always so crap at them. Bought Bloodborne cos I loved the aesthetics of it, but never got that far into it. Later bought Sekiro cos people said it was “easier”...not for me it wasn’t. I impulsively bought Demons Souls (PS5) cos it looked so darn good, but again I never got that far. I think I’ve actually learnt my lesson now cos I’ve resisted buying Elden Ring, despite all the glowing reviews for it.
@Nightcrawler71 That’s totally understandable, they’re not for everyone. Elden Ring does improve on the irritation a lot though, it’s more approachable and rewards your time so much better. You can just wander about for ages and find plenty of fun.
@Nightcrawler71 I totally get that (I never bought any of them myself but I was tempted many times, tried Bloodborne on PS+ and the Demon's Souls remake borrowed from a friend) but this is the first time I'm hearing anyone saying Sekiro was supposed to be easier!
I've heard it was the hardest one!
@velio84@colonelkilgore I am really tempted to pick up Sekiro but still don’t think I understand the differences between it and the usual souls type games. Are there any other games it can be compared to?
@render At the time it came out a lot of people compared it to the "Tenchu" series - but honestly there's not really much of a stealth element to "Sekiro". The combat system is absolutely brilliant but if you don't get it then you're stuck because unlike with the "Souls" games there are no alternatives to the katana. You HAVE to master the block/parry/counter techniques or you're getting nowhere. I absolutely love the game but if you can borrow/rent a copy I'd recommend doing that before spending any money.
@render so I loved Sekiro, it’s a really really good game… but it’s my least favourite From Soft game. The reason being, that the souls-like genre is my absolute favourite game-genre (my comfort-food)… and I wouldn’t consider Sekiro a souls like.
It’s very similar but also distinctly different, as strange as that sounds. First it’s really an action-adventure as opposed to an action-RPG but also, the combat is timed/rhythmic blocking as opposed to the way I play souls-likes (dodging attacks to create an opening to capitalise on).
It’s still awesome though… and unmistakably From Software, I would definitely suggest you give it a go. I’m going back to it later this year as it goes… and really looking forward to it.
@render I will also throw my hat in the Sekiro ring. It was my GOTY that year, but like others have mentioned I wouldn't class as the same type of game as the Souls games and Bloodborne. For one you can't grind to make yourself OP and there is no mulitplayer or NPC summons either.
It is the most difficult out of those I found. But once you get the combat, it is also the best. It feels almost like a rhythm action game at times, and I generally dislike those types of games.
There are similarities though like resting at lamps resets everything and going back to your blood stain to get back your Souls (don't remember what they are called in Sekiro). It also has the same magical enemy and level design that comes with a Miyazaki crafted game.
It actually does sound like Sekiro could be the one for me. Is it also somewhat more linear than Souls? The lack of grind/leveling makes it sound that way.
@LN78@colonelkilgore@velio84@JohnnyShoulder Damn that’s it then looks like I have no choice, I’m going to have to buy it. Thanks for all your replies - although I might not be thanking you so much when I’m pulling my hair out 😅
Seriously though it sounds great and even though I’m no good at parrying either if it’s not like souls parrying then I might stand a chance. I think I’ll queue this up after I’ve finished Cyberpunk.
There are very few games that I regret buying. I was only allowed 2 games/year (birthday & Xmas) so from a young age I was very deliberate with my purchases.
However…1 year I got Alone in the Dark for PS2. Easily the worst game I’ve ever played & didn’t even finish it.
Most recently though is the Monster Boy remake. I got in on sale for like £7 & still felt ripped off.

Skyrim, I figured I'd check it out on Switch but by the time I finished BotW I was extremely burned out on open world games. Even 4 years later, I still feel really burned out on open world games such that I was really excited when BotW 2 got delayed (Nintendo wants a Zelda game every year so BotW 2 delay means high chance of the Zelda Wii U HD remasters coming to Switch this year) so I guess Skyrim will go unplayed for awhile longer.
Don't regret having Skyrim from a collection angle though, Bethesda deciding to support the Switch before they got acquired by Microsoft was a big deal.
@CJD87 Cheers for the recommend. I will definitely be playing it as after all the good praise from others earlier I ordered a copy. Really looking forward to getting my behind kicked in the very near future by what is sounding like a very interesting and challenging game 👍
