Topic: Nostalgia Goggles

After playing super hang on, corporation and alisia dragoon Im a tad sad that these games don't stack up at all anymore. Super hang and corporation are both unplayable. Ive got road rash 2 no box just the cart coming soon and Joe Montana sports talk football, nhlpa jockey and arch rivals being picked up from Taunton next week but if these are rubbish I might start an original xbox or ps1 collection instead. What do you guys think?

I think you'll have the same problem with the xbox and ps1 games to be honest. When I'm getting a nostalgia itch I usually just watch some youtube lets plays, it reminds me that the games are not quite as I remember them but I still get to enjoy them for what they are for 10-15 minutes.

In terms of XB and PS1, a few games do still hold up...I can play MGS and FF7 till the cows come home, but other PS1 games, i.e Syphon Filter are just unplayable to me despite me loving it at the time.

So to summarise, watch a few lets plays on youtube. They are fun

Purely on the topic of nostalgia goggles, it's a weird one. There's no doubt that some games age far better than others - although what that depends on is totally up for debate. For me, a good art style will always last, while good graphics alone will always age. Gameplay is more difficult. PSone games that had tank controls are incredibly hard to play now, for example, but back in the day, we didn't know any better. Could well be a case of simple advancement, but there are still plenty of great old games that hold up today.

One issue I find with aged games and being young, is it's hard to tell if a game was good for it's time, but has aged poorly, or was a bad game.

Nostalgia goggles also determine what systems we buy, games we prefer and things that we don't like in games. I have a video on the topic from a really good, surprisingly unbiased PS youtuber, but I'm not sure if I can link it in the forums. So I'll wait for someone to confirm, before I put it up. Cheers.

I think it's still possible to enjoy a game even if it doesn't hold well, especially if you played it to death in the past. I've always thought a bigger problem was people not seeing a game has aged well and constantly argue the opposite.

Yes, but I only picked up the mega drive a couple of weeks ago. I may buy streets of rage 2 and sonic 2 as both these games are great and still are today - but I loved super hang on and ooh my days Columns is terrible, I remember sitting up all day playing that how is it so bad now?

I have the most fun with the arcade mode because the bike is fully upgraded with turbo and good handling but the original mode is a drag as one needs to end the races in a high position to get the most money to buy upgrades and hope you did not crash to much so you don't have to use the money to repair your bike. I still like to sit down and give this game a go from time to time. The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis is my favorite retro game console. Edit: Besides the PlayStation 2 of course as it plays PS1 games too.

Played it tonight and got a bit further in the original mode. What I noticed most is you crash once its hard to make it through the checkpoints. The animation when he takes slide how annoying is that? You lose time and it takes ages for the bike to get back on the track. What you do need to use is the brake, I know it may sound crazy my thumb was just pinned on B. But once you memorise the tight turns and remember the object placements you can brake a bit and take risks on different turns were there's less or no stuff at the side of the road. Its okay but not anything like I remember, lotus turbo challenge was better.
