In order to start digging up Lunchboxes and Metal Detector Caches straight away, you can find a Metal Detector within the first 10 minutes of the game. Once you reach the open map of Slatten Dale, head west under the bridge, past the Helicopter Crash Site, and into the Slate Mine Caves.

Run through the cave along its right-hand side, avoiding the bats that want to attack you. In here is Reg Stansfield, who you can barter with to get the Metal Detector. It should only take a few items on your side to strike a decent deal with him and get the Metal Detector. From there, you can dig up your first Metal Detector Cache to your left.
