10. Metro Redux (PS4)

Metro Redux may effectively be a compilation, but it includes two killer games from the PS3 era – one of which was exclusive to the Xbox 360 at the time. Both bundled games have thick, oppressive atmospheres, and are significantly upgraded in this package.

9. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (PS4)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare brings back one of the most influential shooters ever in this robust remake. It looks fantastic, plays just as well as you'd expect, and features all the multiplayer goodness you could want. The campaign is the star of the show, though, building on what came before to make it even more cinematic and engaging. One of the better entries in the franchise in recent memory.

8. Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4)

Wolfenstein is a legendary franchise, but in this contemporary entry, developer MachineGames dragged it into the 21st century. Visceral combat and a sprawling single player campaign, packed with memorable locations, make The New Order one of the better FPS games on the PS4.

7. PREY (PS4)

PREY made a valiant attempt to revitalise the franchise, and while it wasn't a big sales success, it remains an engrossing sci-fi thriller. You wake up aboard a mysterious space station, where you're the test subject for the betterment of humanity. Obviously, things go very wrong, and the station is overrun by hostile aliens. Featuring unique enemies, a non-linear location full of details, and imaginative new weapons, it's an atmospheric, tense first-person adventure that'll get under your skin.

6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (PS4)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered brings one of the best and most influential first-person shooters to PS4. Though it shows its age somewhat these days, the game's single-player campaign is still fantastic, with some particularly breathtaking moments still holding up very well. The multiplayer is preserved here, too, and is arguably the best part. Again, it's been bettered in the years since, but there's no denying just how much the online functionality of this title changed the landscape. It's still a lot of fun, and there's a certain charm to its simplicity.

5. Overwatch (PS4)

Overwatch has been superseded by Overwatch 2 now, but it was one of PS4's tightest and most kinetic first person shooters. Blizzard's team-based multiplayer FPS combined excellent gunplay with top tier character design to deliver an endlessly entertaining experience. Each hero was totally unique, and they all complemented each other with crazy abilities that were easy to learn but hard to master. Pretty much everything great about this game has carried over to its successor, but many will fondly remember the original and how it evolved people's expectations of multiplayer shooters.

4. Titanfall 2 (PS4)

Responding to feedback from the original Xbox exclusive, Respawn Entertainment added a full-length campaign to Titanfall 2 – and it’s one of the better shooting encounters you’ll find on the PS4. With high-octane gameplay that really shines in multiplayer and a great blend of intense on-foot action and mech-based bedlam, we’re grateful that EA managed to bring this series to Sony’s system eventually.

3. DOOM (PS4)

One of the FPS originals, id Software resurrected DOOM with spectacular results. An irreverent story-telling approach and genuinely innovative arcade action makes for one of the most gratifying experiences on the PS4, and while the multiplayer mode is a bit of a stinker, the slick campaign with stunningly old-school level design makes this a standout shooter.

2. BioShock: The Collection (PS4)

BioShock: The Collection is just what it says on the tin: all three of the fan favourite games in one place, and remastered for play on PS4. The first is a true modern classic, introducing us to the unsettling undersea city of Rapture, while the sequels build on what it achieves in some very interesting ways. Each game places you in a fascinating setting that's in the midst of falling apart, and a mix of guns and powers make them a unique set of shooters. These are bold, unusual games that stand out thanks to their incredible worlds and subversive narratives.

1. DOOM Eternal (PS4)

Building off its excellent predecessor, DOOM Eternal is arguably the best first-person shooter on PS4. Phenomenal gunplay gives life to an arsenal packed full of mods, alt-fires, and weapons only the folks over at id Software could think of. With fast-paced action, plenty of combat arenas in which to experiment, and speedy movement, DOOM Eternal feels like a game going at 100 miles-per-hour, but you're always in control. One of the franchises which gave birth to the FPS genre is back on top form, and we don't see much topping it.
