10. Paladins (PS4)
The easiest way to describe Paladins is that it's essentially a free to play Overwatch. This first-person hero shooter bares a lot of similarities to Blizzard's ever-popular title, but it's fun enough in its own right. Matches place you and your teammates in objective based rounds, playing as one of several unique characters with their own abilities and strengths. It isn't going to replace your favourite shooter any time soon, but it's worth checking out if you're after a fun, team-based shooter with plenty of replayability.
9. Destiny 2 (PS4)
Destiny 2 isn't an entirely free-to-play game, but it's hard to ignore the fact that it now gives away a huge amount of lootin' shootin' action for the sweet price of nothing. Destiny 2: New Light includes the base game and all of its Year 1 content, which, when you break it all down, is pretty crazy. If you really love it, then there'll come a point where you'll need to spend money in order to catch up on the title's expansions, but you're still looking at several full campaigns, a suite of co-op activities, and even PvP. Given that Destiny 2 remains one of this generation's best shooters — now bolstered with better RPG elements — you can't go wrong in giving Bungie's big one a try.
8. The Sims 4 (PS4)
The longevity of The Sims 4 is kinda nuts, but with EA pumping out seemingly endless content packs and updates, it's no wonder people are still loving it. This life simulation is extremely popular, thanks to its flexible Sim creator, intuitive house building, and deep systems that aim to accurately portray the lives and personalities of your digital people. While you can keep things fairly realistic, the game also lets you go off the deep end, with supernatural creatures and all kinds of other wild tangents available to you. These elements are often contained in premium packs, but the base game is free, and has more than enough to keep you hooked for a long time.
7. Call of Duty: Warzone (PS4)
After Treyarch's wildly successful attempt at Battle Royale with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout mode, it only made sense that Activision would be back a year later with an even bigger and grander outing than before. The standalone expansion to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a solid attempt at replicating the fight for first place while introducing its own ideas into the mix. The likes of the Gulag and Contracts are really cool ideas, but almost completely devoid of looting, the experience may feel a little too simple for some. Still, this is an excellent place to start if you're looking to figure out what the Battle Royale genre is all about.
6. Apex Legends (PS4)
Respawn Entertainment’s attempt at cashing in on the Battle Royale craze is Apex Legends, and it's a good one. A squad-based first-person shooter, the Titanfall spin-off combines elements of Fortnite and Overwatch to make for an addictive arena-based experience. Playing in teams of three you must work together to gather supplies and see off enemy factions. A unique ping system makes communication a breeze, while tight gunplay elevates it above its peers. The only question mark hanging over this Hunger Games-esque experience is whether its developer can iterate quick enough to keep its player base engaged.

Really, really enjoying Apex Legends at the moment.
Realm Royale has been my favorite thus far, although Apex Legends is also very good. I just wish Apex could played solo and not in a squad.
i uninstalled apex legends after about an hour (about 30 minutes of that was constant EA online connection problems). i always keep forgetting that rocket league isn't F2P. warframe is by miles the best F2P on PS4. the only other one i've bothered with is warface, which is a solid enough shooter.
I never cared for Fortinite or any other battle royale however I cannot play anything but Apex Legends at the moment...
@makoshichi Dude same. I haven't enjoyed a shooter this much since Titanfall 2 lol. These Respawn games are always so much fun to me
This is a good list. Shows the fun you can have with little or no funds.
Personally though I would have liked to have seen Neverwinter on the list to represent some of the more classic mmorpgs.
I’ve played maybe 2000 games since the Amiga 500, earned over 16400 trophies, but the FTP game that has me hooked is Gems of War (over 1100 hours according to My PS4 Life).
Warframe is second, Guns Up! third.
PM me on PSN if you want to join my guild.
Out of the games listed I put the most time into Let it Die.
@optic_efun11 I haven't played the first Titanfall at all, and put only a couple of hours into the second one's campaign mode, but I really liked how movement feels in TF2, and Apex feels just like it (apart from, ya know, double jump and wall-running). Respawn Entertainment might have only 3 games in their portfolio, but if this track record is indicative of anything, their upcoming Star Wars game might finally allow me to let 1313 go.
@Vorlon You just broke my heart with your avatar! So many memories...
Oh come on... Paladins should be above Smite...
Great list. Paladins have been my favourite so far. Also, didn't know that Switchblade is free to play, so thanks.
This is a good list either way... I'm just bit sour that Paladins isn't a bit higher on the list.
Might give Fortnite a go, good list free games are always a plus.
No way! Apex Legends is way better than Fortnite. Way better!
@sketchturner That's my biggest reason for not playing Apex Legends right now, no solo play. I too am enjoying Realm Royale right now too as it's my BR game of choice. Kind of surprised it didn't make the list here
I miss the weird communism themed The Tomorrow Children .
Crossout and Gems of War should be on that list.
Having 3 near identical battle royale games on the list is a little redundant if you ask me, especially given the fact that H1Z1 is shockingly bad.
I really think gems of war should be on the list. Played it every day for three years until I finally quit last May.
Warframe definitely deserves at least second place imho. Too many MOBA and Battle Royale games in this list.
Realm Royale should be in the top 5. H1Z1 I don't think should be on the list.
Paladins is also one of the best!
Apex Legends is incredible!
Glad to see Let It Die on there. Not too many people know about that one! So brutal!!
I know, I like Hi Rez studios...
Updated
Let it Die is a great and fun game! But, the one that's free to play that I find myself coming back to constantly, is Gems Of War.
Warframe has a cool community.
Realm Royale and Paladins are my go to games since they came out. I am really happy they on the list and where they are placed. I understand why Smite will still be higher than Paladins but overall this is a fantastic list.
@Vorlon I was the guild leader of quimby and played every day for three years. This may I'll have been clean for a year. That game was like crack! We were in bracket 1 until fairly recently and we had a really good tight-knit group of players. We managed third in guild wars at our peak.
Its a great f2p but I'm glad I quit.
Regards
Nephilim
@Dan_ozzzy189
Hey, if you quit because you were tired of meeting weekly requirements, you are welcome to join my guild as a casual player.
@Vorlon thanks, I had lots of options but at level 1286 and pretty much all troops apart from 3 mythics and zuul and hundreds of arcanes I decided to quit for good. It became too much, too many things to do, too many events etc etc and it was time to quit. It is a great game but every day for three years was enough! Thanks again.
@Dan_ozzzy189 The game has evolved quite a lot since you quit. Troops, pets, visuals and even more events (delves, tower of doom, bounty,... )! I’m (only) at level 1096.
Yeah, I'm still in the psn council of quimby chat so keep contact with a few of the guys but most of them in the group no longer play either. I had all the pets when I quit and a few at mythic. I'm done with the game.
Hey thanks for this list. I've played various card games in my life, and recently I was playing one for ios called Shadow Era, which was quite fun. I'm seriously considering checking out Gwent. The idea of playing a card game and getting trophies at the same time sounds really fun. Has a rare platinum of 0.3% too!
I've put more hours into Warframe than any other game I've played. The constant improvements & expansions are to be commended. Anthem should of had a long hard look at this as a model.
Updated with Dauntless. Really good alternative to Monster Hunter!
Surely Destiny 2 is now the best free to play game on PS4?
Destiny is the best free to play game.thats a easy one.word up son
yes, Destiny 2 is easily the best free to play game, a pretty complete package
@Vorlon Gems of War is AMAZING! I'm about 170 hours in on Switch, having only discovered it fairly recently. It's hooked me in!
Paladins deserves to be higher, its more fun than overwatch.
It was very obvious Fortnite would be number 1. I like Warframe and some of these others certainly look interesting. Will check them out later.
One game that Sony should have re released on PS4 and for free should have been WarHawk that game was such fun back in the day I put so many hours into that. Shame it had it's servers cut off yeah there's a fan based server but I feel it should have had a PS4 release
Tried almost all of them, but Paladins is the one I played the most... yeah it's buggy and many call it an Overwatch ripoff but still fun!
@mjacobs92 Yeah,I agree with you.
How about Genshin Impact? Its out on september 28!
Bless Unleashed october 22
No neverwinter...seriously? Better than dauntless and terra...path of exile is my fave on the list and is better than diablo 3 only because its free...
I love me some rocket league but everyone else I know hates it. Which sucks as it’s impossible to get a good squad of three together. I play a bit of doubles occasionally but it tends to highlight the fact I’m pretty bad at it 😂
Genshin impact and destiny 2 is the best free to play games.easily.word life.word is bond.word to your mother.word up son
Is Warframe worthy if played solo?
@andreoni79 Definitely worth a shot even if you're playing solo! Admittedly I enjoyed it more with a friend, but still had plenty of fun on my own as well.
Good to see Genshin made the article. Very much recommended if you like ecploring/RPG style gacha games.
Rocket league makes me cream in my spittoon!
Fair Warning - Warframe may well take over your life! Don't think I played much else for first year or two of my ps4 ownership... No idea how it has evolved since - don't want to know.
No eFootball?!
Seriously though, if and when the bugs are ironed out and new content added, that would surely be on this list. This time next year maybe?
List is missing Kitten Squad for some reason.
