30. Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster (PS4)

If you're itching for an angsty JRPG that's very much a product of its time, Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster is the game for you. Square Enix did a great job of updating this saga for both modern and nostalgic audiences. Even though parts of it have definitely aged, Final Fantasy X remains a landmark release, telling a love story that's full of weird twists, spread across an intriguing and unique fantasy world. X-2, on the other hand, borders on fan fiction. A direct sequel to X that's campy beyond measure — but it's still a fun time thanks to well worked gameplay mechanics.

29. Elden Ring (PS4)

Elden Ring may not be at its best on PS4, but that doesn't take away from what is an utterly essential trek through The Lands Between. Far and away FromSoftware's best game to date, the developer has expanded on the Souls formula with an open world setting that almost feels like three of its past titles all jam-packed into one gigantic offering. With hundreds of locations to explore, numerous bosses to beat, and build lists off the charts, Elden Ring is the Dark Souls swansong as FromSoftware raises its game all over again. You absolutely must play this.

28. Hades (PS4)

PlayStation users had to wait a little while to play Hades, but it was certainly worth the patience. Supergiant Games' rogue-like dungeon crawler is every bit as good as you've heard. It effortlessly weaves an intriguing storyline into the looping structure, ingeniously building a character-driven plot that evolves as you delve deeper into the Underworld. Gameplay is responsive and fast, with each weapon and upgrade providing you with all kinds of fun opportunities. Rogue-like games aren't for everyone, but Hades is up there with the absolute best the genre has to offer.

27. Trails from Zero (PS4)

Trails from Zero on PS4 is a remaster of the original PSP release from 2010. As such, it can certainly look a bit dated at times, but don't let the visuals put you off what is a fantastic JRPG. The first game in a two-part saga, Zero takes place in and around the city of Crossbell, as crime and corruption threaten to uproot the lives of its citizens. You play as rookie detective Lloyd Bannings, who, together with a ragtag investigation squad, is tasked with uncovering Crossbell's darkest truths. Excellent characters and a superb setting make for a Falcom classic.

26. Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition (PS4)

Player choice is the defining trait of this ambitious RPG. Yes, the sequel to Divinity: Original Sin is the better game — both in terms of writing and gameplay design — but there's still so much enjoyment to pull from Larian's first outing. Some great questlines will have you questioning your moral compass, while playing alongside a friend is an option right from the start. Just try not to fall out with each other over differing opinions!

25. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV (PS4)

Bringing a bombastic end to the Cold Steel saga, Trails of Cold Steel IV attempts to tie four games' worth of stories up across an adventure that can last well over 100 hours. A daunting prospect, but developer Falcom somehow makes it work — and that's perhaps Cold Steel IV's most impressive achievement. This is as dense as Trails games get, both in terms of storytelling and gameplay. The series' turn-based combat has been adjusted for better balance, there's a greater sense of freedom to exploration, and a huge roster of playable party members allows for some serious tactical tinkering. A deeply engrossing, often brilliant finale.

24. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III (PS4)

A leap forward from the first two Cold Steel titles thanks to a new engine, Trails of Cold Steel III sees a slightly older Rean Schwarzer return to his beloved Thors Military Academy as an instructor. Guiding an all-new Class VII in their special ops missions, it isn't long until old friends (and old enemies) start popping up in what is often an engrossing character-driven story. What's more, Cold Steel III makes some fantastic additions to the series' already great turn-based combat system, while larger environments offer so many opportunities for exploration. One of Falcom's finest.

23. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix (PS4)

Stuffed with extra content, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix (try saying that three times fast) features not only two of the most beloved action RPGs in history, but also Re:Chain of Memories from the Game Boy Advance, and Birth By Sleep from the PSP. The game hasn’t aged as gracefully as others on this list, but there is undeniable magic here and, of course, a huge sequel to dive into.

22. NieR: Automata (PS4)

NieR: Automata's complete and utter disregard for your time pays off in so many ways. Yoko Taro's android-based adaptation of Hamlet may seem like anime schlock for the first 20 hours or so, but stick with it and you'll be rewarded with one of the richest narratives in games today. This character action title revels in subverting your expectations, and it crescendos with a mind-blowing climax that will leave your jaw on the floor.

21. Divinity: Original Sin II - Definitive Edition (PS4)

Refining the tone of its writing and delivering a much better paced story, Divinity: Original Sin II is a huge improvement on an already great role-playing experience. Character creation is meaningfully in-depth, and every action throughout your adventure further defines your hero. As far as player choice goes, Larian's sequel is one of the very best titles on PS4, and the many paths that you can take make it a brilliantly replayable package.
