F1 2021 (PS4)

Real-world Formula One drivers are fitter than most athletes, so F1 2021 unquestionably qualifies as one of the best sports games for PS4. Key additions include a cinematic story mode called Braking Point, which peeks behind the curtain of what it takes to make it onto the podium. There's also a co-op Career mode, which has comfortably steered this motorsport ace onto our list.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game (PS4)

- Olympic Games
- Players
- 8
SEGA channels its 90s origins with this arcade-inspired adaptation of the coronavirus delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Featuring a diverse range of activities, this minigame compilation demands a podium position by mixing athletics with oft-overlooked events like BMX and boxing. Dressed in colourful, cartoon clothing, and with lots of ways to play, this is a golden release deserving of your time.
FIFA 22 (PS4)
- Type
- Simulation
- Sport
- Football
- Players
- 4
FIFA 22’s last-gen version may lack the heavily advertised HyperMotion Technology of its PS5 peer, but a rewrite to goalkeepers along with some overall improvements to physics and artificial intelligence still make it the best football game on PS4. With a deeper Player Career and a minigame-fuelled reimagining of street football side-mode VOLTA, this is a title that aims for the top bins – and finds it with Kevin De Bruyne-like precision.
Everybody's Golf (PS4)

- Golf
- Players
- 1
Everybody’s Golf has been largely the same game for decades, but with its inaugural PS4 instalment, Clap-Hanz elevated the formula by adding in plenty of customisation options and open world courses. It makes the game feel much more alive than its predecessors, and with buggies to drive and daily competitions to compete in, there’s much more to engage with than ever before. Perhaps most importantly, the underlying click-click-click gameplay remains easy to execute but challenging to master.
DiRT Rally 2.0 (PS4)
- Type
- Simulation
- Sport
- Rally
- Players
- 8
Codemasters’ intensely hardcore rally simulation returns for another race, with licensed content from the FIA World Rallycross Championship. Punishingly lifelike physics and a new weather modelling system mean that you’ll need to have perfect focus in order to podium, but the range of vehicles and tracks mean that mastering DiRT Rally 2.0 is a rewarding endeavour. There's even PSVR support for the ultimate in immersion.

NHL 19 is easily better than a third of the games listed... 😳
@KALofKRYPTON I had it in the list but then we decided to add the racing games. That said, we didn't love NHL 19: https://www.pushsquare.com/reviews/ps4/nhl_19
@get2sammyb I read the review before I bought it.
Whether through updates since launch or just personal taste, I can't really tally the review to the game I've been playing other than bits of the presentation getting repetitive.
It's as deep as you want it to be, or not. Looks and sounds good, control is incredible too. And there's an astonishing amount of content there.
The only sports games that have really appealed to me this gen are the MLB The Show entries. I used to love NBA 2K as well but haven't been that enamored with it since the tail end of last gen. I miss getting good tennis games and more arcadey licensed games. NBA 2K Playgrounds is pretty cool for that stuff, but doesn't do for this gen what NBA Jam did way back in the day.
Real player motion is a buzzword. Maybe on PC. But on the Ps4, after the first few updates the new range of motion was patched out. Not including all the glitches still in the game.
FIFA at no 2?! When are people going to stop sucking up to that game and accept it's dreadful?!
As for skateboarding games, don't get me started. I can't believe we've not had a decent one this whole generation seeing as how popular THPS was on PS2 and Skate was on PS3.
Rocket League is acceptably high on this list.
Happy EG is a #5 very easy to play a round when you feel like it. PES should be higher than FIFA IMO. The gameplay is much better ON THE PITCH, where it counts.
MLB the show! No brainer
Still no sign of a tennis game. Did the Top Spin games not sell well? It seems if you can make a half decent sports game you can patch every year and sell it as a new product.
Doesn’t criticise pes when it is at 14th, Fifa is 2nd and you say the gameplay lags behind it. IMO, gameplay is more important than a nice champions league presentation so a very interesting decision.
haha i love NBA 2k19 : great gameplay and best franchise mode. that's it.. i don't bother playing Fifa games because i am not into Fifa games.. Madden 20 is worst football game ever i played
Where is the review of PES 2020?
I'd love a new fight night game or any kind of decent boxing sim
Man, I guess I need to play MLB The Show. I’m not much of a baseball fan, or much of a sports game fan in general, but I do have The Show free on PS Plus.
A British publication puts fifa at the bottom and American baseball on the top? Wtf
You need a guide for the best card games on ps4!
I just love Everybody's Golf Addictive fun Having played Pro Evo 2020 extensivley I can honestly say for me it is the best so far and the free DLC at the end of the month is a welcomed addition as for the Show I agree No1.
Good list Sammy.

Until today, even on PS4 still lack of Cute Cartoonish Boxing games like on 90's era or early 2000's era.
I realy want a Cartoonish Boxing game at least like my Chibi Boxers.
@get2sammyb
You should add Fall guy since its based on (obstacles course races) sport 😉
Daley Thompson's Decathlon and Sensible World of Soccer are easily better than all of the games listed... 😳
Well... it flew under the radar for some, but captain tsubasa: rise of new champions is my pick. Very fun game.
@Bingbongboyo I tried to play SWOS recently via emulation. How the fu*k I used to play, and be good at that game is beyond me. It’s so hard now.
@JeffWhiff what emulation are you using? I've been thinking of creating my Vita into an emulation. SWOS was a hard game to master in the day too!
@Bingbongboyo I built a RetroPie and use an old wired Xbox 360 controller. Don’t do it though, your childhood memories will be crushed. Always move forwards, never backwards.
@JeffWhiff haha! I'll stick with PlayStation then!
@Bingbongboyo This makes me want to give it another go though https://sensiblesoccer.de/swos-2020
@JeffWhiff bloody hell, that's amazing. Now I want to get it going!
After getting MLB The Show 19 free with plus last year I have become a convert. Super addicting gameplay. I mainly play RTTS though. So satisfying when you hit that ball! Just got 20 in the sale and there are some refinements but again, just love playing that game.
F12021 is brilliant. FIFA22, best fifa in years. MLB The Show is a must in my book.
Did not play Madden did year. But one of the first games I'll try on SteamDeck. Also Dirt 2.0 in VR is a racing fan dream. Racing games alone justified my PC VR investment.
Cant wait for GT7
@Chris0160
I think "buzzword" on PS5/XSX at this point. The new HyperMotion for FIFA22 is not on PC either.
Wow, is Super Mega Baseball 3 really just stealing Ken Griffey Jr.'s likeness like that?
Are we sure Dirt Rally 2.0 is on PSVR? I’d love it to be but unless it changed they said it wasn’t getting the upgrade. I still play Dirt Rally in PSVR every now and then- wonderful experience.
Where is NHL? Way better than any of those crap indie ones besides Rocket League
PGA21 is a great golf simulator that feels like half a game. I was hoping for a Tiger woods type game and I’m good with them going more realistic…. But the lack of player progression is really a bummer.
