God of War Ragnarok: How to Beat Heimdall

God of War Ragnarok: How to Beat Heimdall

Heimdall prides himself on being impervious to damage through his ability to read his opponent's mind. No matter what you try, you won't be able to hit him. Struggle long enough and Mimir will tell you what you have to do — but just in case, we'll detail the strategy here.

It's all about your spear. Hurl one at Heimdall and he'll grab it out of the air, but while it's in his hand, you can detonate it. This will catch the annoying Aesir completely off guard, and the real fight will begin.

To start with, you'll have to keep checking Heimdall with your spears. The problem is that he'll actually stop catching them, and simply swat them aside instead. So, rather than aiming directly at Heimdall, start planting them in his path, or in places where he can be lured towards. Once he's close enough, detonate your spears and open him up to further damage.

Bit by bit, you'll start breaking Heimdall's confidence. He'll begin flinging biforst projectiles at range, which you'll have to dodge. You'll also have to be wary of his quick movement and grab attacks, as well as an unblockable jab that comes out fast in close quarters. He's a tricky opponent, but you can take out large chunks of his health once he's finally opened up. Remember to tie your most powerful runic attacks into your combos when you get the chance.

With a few well-placed parries and dodge rolls that take your to his side or rear, getting in on Heimdall gets easier as the fight rumbles on. Then, it's time for round two.

The second phase of Heimdall's boss battle sees him adopt a more aggressive fighting style that involves a lot of punching. These blows are fast and powerful, so you need to keep a very close eye on his movements and the colour of the rings that indicate the type of attack he's about to use. The unblockable punch in particular can be a pain to deal with — he can unleash it from distance, and it comes with an extra quick approach.

Heimdall also likes punching the ground, which results in an area of effect blast, so dodge rolls are essential. What's more, the most powerful of these earth-shakers will need to be shield smashed before Heimdall is able to unleash the bifrost blast.

Keeping up with Heimdall's onslaught can be rough, but once you're familiar with his attack patterns, you can take full advantage of his standard hits with parries, opening him up to big damage. A satisfying victory awaits.
