God of War Ragnarok: How to Beat The Maven
The Maven is an undeniably dangerous opponent. She shares many of Alva's moves and techniques, except The Maven is much more aggressive, and she tends to mix up her attack patterns way more often.
For starters, be aware that when she throws her swords, she throws them twice — and both times, they need to be parried (or dodged at the very last second, although this is much harder to get right). If you miss the parry and block it instead, your guard will be broken and The Maven will immediately close in and deal big damage. This is really the key part of the battle that you must get right if you want to earn victory relatively unscathed.
She also has an unblockable projectile that's fairly easy to dodge, but she'll often follow it up with more melee strikes. Again, the trick is to not get caught out doing the wrong thing. In particular, watch for those blue rings that signal the need for a shield smash. If you miss one, The Maven will unleash a powerful area of effect attack that's otherwise impossible to stop.
The Maven's regular combo, which sees her dash towards you and lash out with several sword slashes, can be blocked and then parried midway through — but you need to be wary of the heavy attacks (which must be parried) and the deceptively fast unblockable strikes that she can place at the end of the combo.
Playing patiently is your best bet, here. The Maven never really lets up in her offence, so only retaliate when you know there's an opening.

I've been stuck on this for a week now and can't get out of the battle (I should have had two separate save slots...). How has anyone managed to do this? I've spent hours trying and gotten nowhere. I did this part of the game as soon as I could and really wish I'd saved the side quests for later now. I'm considering restarting the whole game, is there any hope of beating The Maven?
