We're not quite sure how it will work in the context of a franchise that is entirely story-driven and has some, well, admittedly lame gun combat.
Regardless, it's there and is being developed by Digital Extremes, the team that worked on Dark Sector.
In the multiplayer you'll play as a Plasmid test subject working for Sinclair Solutions during the fall of Rapture as you battle other players in re-worked game locales like Kashmir Restaurant and Mercury Suites. Winning matches will earn you experience, of which can be spent on new plasmids and weapons.
There's much more on the multiplayer mode here. What are your thoughts, valued read - does Bioshock need multiplayer?
