As shown in the patent, the Playstation Eye is detecting laughter and smiles from the user. The patent notes other emotions: sadness, excitement, anger, joy, interest, and boredom.
Much like Microsoft's Natal, we're struggling to think of a genuine use for something akin to this. While those behind the hype of Natal are commandeering this type of application in games, we're much more sceptical. If you can think of a use for this technology, let us know in the comments. Otherwise, we'll continue questioning the purpose of "emotion detection" in games.
