Sometimes the cutting edge technology out-stips the retail price. Take the PlayStation 3 for an example of that, which has only just began to make money.
Despite treating the PlayStation Move like a platform launch, Sony will not be retreading the same mistakes with their motion control. Sony's Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida's told Develop that this hardware is going to make a profit out of the gates.
We are pricing Move as if we are launching a new platform. So because the install base of Move will help third party studios create games for it, we benefit by helping those third-parties. But we are not losing money with each one we sell, said Yoshida.
The technology we chose was the PlayStation Eye, and the technology sensors in Move thats not just hardware, thats the software as well. The system uses a fraction of an SPU, and that really is the key.
So we are able to use sophisticated technology on the cameras and the sensors, but that with the combination of the computing power of the PS3, we can make the system really, really accurate and precise.
Retailers have been listing individual Move controllers at £34.99, but there's been lots of movement over the past few weeks. And a report on MCV suggests you might be able to pick up a Move motion controller for even cheaper. According to the website, Sony's confirmed that an individual motion device will come attached with an RRP of £24.99. That's cheap.
The device is set to launch in September.
