PlayStation Move is only a few days away from being on the market for 6 full months. It’s no secret that PlayStation Move has been widely accepted from a technical standpoint, and the software supporting the peripheral has also been quite impressive in such a short span of time with great titles such as Killzone 3, MAG, echochrome ii and Sports Champions, just to name a few. But how has PlayStation Move done on the sales charts?
VGChartz reports that there are now four million PlayStation Move compatible consoles available as of February 26, 2011. This means that eight percent of PlayStation 3’s are now equipped with PlayStation Move, and this puts the sales estimates of Move controllers at over 6.5 million units sold.
At launch Sony made the statement that Move would sell itself without the need for an over-abundance of advertisement. Word of mouth seems to be working quite well for Sony so far, and with Killzone 3 sales numbers showing 500,000 units sold in its launch week, and supporting fantastic Move support, the sales numbers for this month will likely be quite impressive as well. The future of Move is looking bright with these sales numbers, and with future titles such as SOCOM 4: US Navy SEALs and PlayStation Move Heroes, Move seems to have quickly made its mark on the gaming industry and secure its place as a viable option in the motion controlled gaming world.

that subtitle is glorious.
"At launch Sony made the statement that Move would sell itself without the need for an over-abundance of advertisement"
Yes, but they STILL should do that and it would sell even more. This is why the Kinect is selling more than the Move. This is why the Wii still continues to sell. Sony just don't advertise enough, plain and simple.
And, tbh, I'm disapppointed in the lack of support for Move in upcoming games. Ok, we have Tiger, Top Spin, VT, but 2 out of 3 of those have extremely poor Move controls/support. Looking forward to SOCOM, but thats the only game I am looking forward to that has Move support. No news on GR Future Soldier or Battlefield 3 incorporating Move. No news on any more previously released games gaining Move through patch. This article sounds optimistic, but I'm actually beginning to be disappointed in support for what is actually a great technological achievement.
Put me in the disappointed and pessimistic bunch. Aside from Killzone 3 and a handful of Move only games (Sports Champions, for example), it seems like developers are unwilling to spend all of the extra development time it takes to design and test for one more controller type, which only accounts for 8% of PS3s which account for less than 1/3rd of the console market. With the Wii it was much easier because 100% of all Wii owners have a motion controller so it is a less risky development venture.
And here I was looking forward so much to Tiger Woods 12 because it was supposedly being designed from the ground up with the Move in mind (not exclusively so) and yet it has some very quirky and inconsistent (and downright unrealistic) control. Top Spin 4 is even far worse.
These numbers, 8% of all PS3s, are actually discouraging.
TW 12 might have changed by the time we try the final version.....
Sports Champions, John Daly's Prostroke, MAG, Hustle Kings Pool, and Planet Mini Golf are pretty amazing so far.
The Move sets a new level what can be done and the interaction.
I look forward to games like Sorcery and SOCOM 4 and a lot more.
Already areas like FPS are becoming almost perfect with Move, making the standard dual shock seem kinda boring.
As it's still fairly new I am sure it's going to take some time before it has a great library like Wii has.
over a million move's per month seems like a success to me. im curious though how many copies of killzone 3 were sold to move owners.
@autogolazzo... The 8% number is significant because it's higher than Sony anticipated the install base for Move to be at this time. If I remember correctly Sony was anticipating a 3-5% install base.
@Wastedyuthe... I think what you are seeing is the cycle of the developers who jumped on board the Move ship early, and now the lull until all the developers who have since signed onto Move and are currently in development. I think we are about to hit a bit of a dry spout in the way of big games, but I really think titles like the upcoming Dungeon Defenders, Ape Escape, and Under Siege will hold us over nicely!
@slapshot82: i hope you're right and there will be a time the Move really does take off in a big way. Let's hope games such as SOCOM and Killzone etc will encourage other dev's.
I have 4 or 5 PSN games that support the Move well, and Sports Champions and EyePet and RE5. It's fills a niche for me, but isn't part of my core gaming. Perhaps one day... But to be honest, I'm quite happy with normal handheld controllers like the DS3. I'll get KZ3 one day and I'm sure I'll use it the Move with it. But I'll probably also pick up Homefront one day and be just as happy with the DS3.
My interest for the Move is in a games like Sorcery, Tumble, and Sports Champions which cannot be played with another type of controller. The developers look at what the Move can do and design a great game to make use of it.
Ive had my Move since launch n Im quite happy with it to be honest. Cant stand playing FPS with a DS3 anymore lol After playing MAG n Killzone 3 it is a little annoying that Insomniac is dragging their feet over whether to put Move support on Resistance3 or not. Wouldn't mind more developers supporting Move. It does seem a little lacking at the moment but there is some decent games coming soon for the Move
I've got 2 Move controllers the first day it came out and never been any happier. I love the accuracy and precision of the controller. FPS works almost flawlessly with Move. I've been playing Killzone 3 with the Move Sharpshooter and would not even touch the Dualshock as it is now my preferred choice. It puts me in a level of immersion like I've never experienced before.
I also have many Move enabled games like Sports Champion, Start the Party, Tumble, Flight Control, RE5, MAG, Killzone 3, The Fight, The Shoot, Heavy Rain, LBP2, Eyepet, Lord of the Rings Aragon's quest and many others. Looking forward to Socery, Move Heroes and Virtual Tennis.
I hope this helps the sceptics out there.
the technology is there, but the games are lacking..nough said.
