Sony's communications manager, Patrick Seybold, has given a further update on the current PSN landscape over night. Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Seybold revealed that the platform holder are working "around the clock" to bring services online.
Yesterday the company cited an "external intrusion" as reason for the outage. That's brought a lot of speculation regarding leaked personal data. As far as we understand, Sony's silence in this area is positive news. Should credit card or other personal information have been leaked, Sony would be legally responsible to inform their customers. Seeing as Sony's said nothing about personal data, it's safe to assume the platform holder defused the threat in time.
It's starting to sound like Sony pulled down the PlayStation Network as a precautionary measure. Seybold strengthens this assumption by stating that "our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure". Evidently someone detected a flaw in the system and Sony's had to pull the Network down while they fix it.
It's of course, still awful timing. And a task like re-building this system sounds like a huge undertaking. Hopefully it won't take as long as it sounds.
In the mean-time, perhaps you'd like to investigate our list of top "ten games to play while the PlayStation Network is down".
