We were wrong. Apparently developer Stainless Games has bought the rights for the Carmageddon franchise off Square Enix. The website is therefore owned by the developer, not Square Enix. The new game will be announced on June 1st.

We're anticipating that the game will be a downloadable affair, though it's hard to be certain of anything until the game's June 1st announcement. Stainless Games has released PlayStation Network titles before, though the studio has released many more XBOX 360 games. Carmageddon has a heritage on the PlayStation though, so we're guessing that if Stainless is serious about rebooting the franchise, they'll be looking to PS3.
