The Internet seems to have replaced all its goodwill for the PlayStation Vita — born out of an excellent E3 showing and fantastic price-point — for trepidation and concerns. The main take-away, as far as we understand it, is that the pressure is back on Sony now Nintendo's decided to dramatically drop the price of its Nintendo 3DS due to some shockingly poor sales reports.
But from where we're sitting, things are roughly as they were. The Nintendo 3DS is sure to get a boost off the back of its price-cut (and it's much needed by the sounds of things), but PlayStation Vita still holds the same outstanding value it did yesterday. Pre-E3 we were all worrying about the price of the device — assuming it could cost upwards of $400. Suddenly the Vita is not value for money at $250?
Sony's been impeccable with its handling of the Vita up until now, except for one clinical area: release date. Despite announcing a worldwide Fall release date at E3, SCEA president Jack Tretton quickly confused the matter by replacing that Fall 2011 release date with a Fiscal 2011 release date. We've been on tenterhooks ever since.
It's something Sony really needs to sure up over the next couple of weeks. Nintendo's made the right move for its platform, and enthusiasm is back in the Japanese giant's court. But as we've already mentioned, the Vita has not particularly lost any momentum based on Nintendo's announcements, and it only stands to do so by missing that all important 2011 release date.
Getting the system out in time for Christmas is now paramount. So it's exciting to get a press release this afternoon reiterating a 2011 release for Sony's new system.
The press release from 505 Games confirms a "Fall 2011" release of Supremacy MMA on the PlayStation Vita. Seeing as Sony is yet to set a date — though it's heavily rumoured the company will make an announcement at E3 — it's promising to see publishers continue to announce titles within the "Fall" window.
On the game itself, "Supremacy MMA for PS Vita will come packing exclusive content including new fighters, venues and features found only on the PS Vita, delivering all the brutality and fast arcade action of the most controversial MMA game in history on the hottest handheld of this generation."
505 Game president Ian Howe was keen to reiterate the promise of the title, and it's potential release this year: "Supremacy MMA takes MMA where it's never gone before, with unprecedented brutality and arcade speed, and now it's headed for another new frontier as the sole MMA game to go to handheld in 2011.
"The arcade-styled gameplay is perfectly suited for quick handheld sessions, and the game looks amazing on Sony's hot new tech."
In order to deflect, 505's said that press release represents the date that the publisher believes the PlayStation Vita will hit UK shores, and not inside information from Sony. Unfortunately, it's the best we have to go on for now.
