Naughty Dog’s Game Director Justin Richmond was asked during an interview about Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception what he thought of Nintendo's latest console, the Wii U. Richmond says he does find the integration between a console and touch-enabled tablet intriguing, but notes Sony will be able to replicate a similar partnership when they launch the PlayStation Vita later this year:
To be honest with you, the idea of it is very, very cool. But there’s nothing that the Wii U has that the Vita and PS3 doesn’t.
Richmond goes on to say that the Wii U is an "interesting piece of technology," and that he's "interested to see how people use it," but highlights a certain functionality that Wii U lacks: multi-touch:
I’m not completely sold yet. That the screen isn’t multi-touch, that’s a little weird.
His scepticism does get tempered by some praise however, enabling him to cover his proverbial tuckus should the Wii U be as much of a hit as the original Wii.
It seems there are some very strange holes in it, but to be fair, last time I was sceptical of the original Wii, and look at how that did. I’m sure that he games they make for Wii U will be amazing.

That's cool and all, but do we really want that kind of experience? I guess time will tell...

I didn't realize I worked for Naughty Dog . Seriously though--why in god's name would any touch-enabled device not be multi-touch these days? DS was forgivable given when it came out, as were DS-lite and DSi. 3DS and Wii U not featuring multitouch is a complete and total joke though.

Yeah, I can agree it's weird for the Wii U, but I don't see where the 3DS really needs multitouch.
@Superducky - It doesn't need it, but given how many games for all current-gen mobile devices were made with multitouch in mind, it seems like kind of a stupid decision not to include it. Pinch zoom has become a standard in mobile UI interaction/web browsing now, and it's another area where the 3DS falls flat on its face.
Absolutely ridiculous. We don't know what the WiiU is going to sell for, but let's crunch some numbers. A PS3 bundle with the Move runs $400. The nunchuck is seperate! Another $30. The Vita will run $250.
I'm sure the WiiU will sell for less than $680! Some will argue that WiiU may not come with a nunchuck, so let's not include it in the Sony "package"... still $650!
Finally, there IS NO MOTION SENSOR in the Vita that can pick up wand motion! The WiiU tablet DOES pick up wand motion from a Wii controller. So, it is DEFINITELY NOT the same. It LOOKS similar, aesthetically. But the folks at Naughty Dog don't know what they are talking about. Completely ignorant thing for them to say. But then they are one of Sony's li'l buddies, so it is to be expected.
@mago2k7 Actually, Vita may be getting Move support!
@7, I'm sure they'll find a way to do it.
Yeah, Sony pwns all, we know
Funny. Don't these guys work for Sony? Considering the entire response is "It's good, but Sony is better"
@2 Ive wondereed that...
The difference is, I don't have to buy a new system. Just a handheld. Especially a Nintendo one.
It took Sony this long to make a real successor to the PSP. What Sony has been doing to their PSPs over the year is like upgrading the DSi to the DSi XL. No real change, apart from a few minor touches. What says we won't go grey (or at least, us young ones won't ) before we see another greater PlayStation?
What's also absurd is that they believe they've prolonged the PS3 with the invention of Move. That, my friends, has no effect whatsoever on how long it is before the PS3 expires. Which, to me, it already has. Sony needs to get their act together. The PS Vita might be impressive and confronting to the 3DS, but that doesn't mean it's over.
