The ability to play PlayStation 3 games via your PSP was a brilliant one, but so little software took advantage of the feature that it quickly became worthless.
With PlayStation Vita, Sony's planning on stepping up its Remote Play functionality. Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida demonstrated this during a keynote overnight by playing Killzone 3 via the PlayStation Vita. The technology works as such: the game runs on PS3 and then outputs a steam onto the Vita's screen. In return, the Vita sends inputs back to the PS3, allowing you to play the game remotely. Hence the name.
On PS Vita, Remote Play will work via local Wi-Fi or over the Internet, allowing you to pick-up-and-play PS3 games where-ever you are — assuming you've got a connection.
Yoshida added that though the PS Vita lacks a couple of buttons from the DualShock, these can be easily replicated via the system's rear touch-pad. Yoshida demonstrated how the rear touch-pad was separated into four distinct "buttons", allowing him to run and pop into iron-sights with a touch of the pad.
The executive stressed that the updated technology is still in development, so don't expect it until after launch. But it sounds like the platform holder is aiming to ensure all future PS3 titles work with Remote Play, which is a big deal.
