After much speculation over exactly who would power Vita's 3G network across Europe, Sony has revealed it's joining forces with Vodafone to provide the console's always-on connectivity.
The deal extends to the following countries:
UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand and The Netherlands, and with Vodafone’s Partner in France (SFR).
Interestingly, Sony specifies that both models of the Vita — that's Wi-Fi and 3G — will come with a Vodafone SIM card in the box in selected countries. Anyone joining up to the Vodafone service will also be able to download Wipeout 2048 for free.
What do you make of this appointment?

The good news is that the system is not locked to Vodafone. While you'll get a Voda SIM in the pack, you don't have to use it - you can use a SIM from your own preferred network.
Personally, I'll be using a giffgaff SIM on one of their gigabag deals.
I don't understand half the words in that last sentence but OK.
Free Wipeout 2048? Tempting, but it's still £50 more...

@paranoimia, does this mean that in the US, we won't need to use an AT&T sim card as well? Or is this freedom reserved for European buyers only?
The last thing I wanna do is get stuck in AT&T's network >.<
@Rambo-Hamster I'm 95% certain AT&T is the exclusive 3G partner in the US, but perhaps one of our US Vita experts can confirm that
@James: Yeah, it's AT&T — i remember agreeing with the booing during that part of their E3 conference, lol. :3
@Rambo-Hamster - I'm not sure. It could be unlocked in Europe due to anti-competition laws or something like that. I've asked @MusterBuster (of the SCEE team) on Twitter if the US model is locked to AT&T and will post here again if I get a response.
@Rambo-Hamster - @Musterbuster doesn't have any info regarding the US Vita and whether it's locked to AT&T. He suggests contacting one of the US team.
