The well equipped handheld was outsold by the 3DS, PSP, Wii and PS3 during its first full week on the market, recording sales of just over 70,000 units. For comparison, Nintendo's newly re-surged handheld platform scooped up numbers just under 500,000 units for the week.
Adding to the system's woes, not one PlayStation Vita title made it into the software top twenty for the week — indicating that interest in the platform is already waning.
It's not all doom and gloom; the PlayStation Vita is still finding its feet in the region and it's too early to make any sweeping statements about the future. But with no mega releases on the horizon — outside of anomalies such as Gravity Daze — it's going to be hard for Sony to maintain mindshare into the new year.
While the PlayStation Vita struggled, it wasn't all bad news for Sony in Japan this week. Both the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 posted strong numbers, the former of which almost doubling its tally from the previous week to surpass 100k.
The PlayStation 3's Musou Orochi 2 was the best selling new software release for the week, pulling in 200,526 units. The dubbed version of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for PS3 also charted, recording just over 50k units. A subtitled version of the FPS launched back in November, and sold over 180k units on PlayStation 3.
Elsewhere, Final Fantasy XIII-2 held up well, pushing another 118k units in its second week on sale — bringing its total tally up to just under 650k.
