The platform holder previously predicted that it would sell 15 million consoles during the fiscal year ending in March 2012, and executive Andrew House has told journalists that he fully expects the system to hit that lofty target.
House added that as of November 2nd, 2011, the PlayStation 3 has sold 56 million units. That's just under 2 million less than the XBOX 360 which enjoyed a significant headstart.
But the console wars aren't really the attraction — indeed, it's more important to see Sony's system gain a steady footing after such a shaky start. PlayStation 3 is now poised to enjoy a very successful end to the generation.
House didn't predict any PlayStation Vita launch sales, but he did explain that the speed at which Sony turns a profit on the hardware will depend entirely on currency exchange rates. The rising yen has proved a big problem for Japanese companies, including Nintendo.
