Japanese Sales Charts: PS Vita Sells 42K, 3DS Unstoppable

Considering all the doom and gloom around the Internet regarding the PlayStation Vita's unspectacular second week sales, the system actually held relatively well in its third week

PlayStation Vita's now sold around 440k units in Japan since its launch in mid-December.

Given some armchair analysts were expecting the sytem to drop as low as 10k units, its actual sell through of 42k units looks mightily impressive in comparison.

Of course, it's still a long way away from where a newly launched system should be — and lightyears away from the resurged Nintendo 3DS — but it's a strong enough showing to put an end to some of the more exuberant "doomed" nonsense that's plagued the 'net over the past seven days.

The PS Vita's strongest competitor continues to be its predecessor, with the PSP outselling Sony's new platform for the second week running. The numbers were much tighter this time around though, with the PSP pushing a decent 62k and the PS3 managing 67k.

Life-to-date numbers for the PlayStation Vita now stand at just under 440k units, which is just shy of Sony's initial 500k shipment. So it's not all bad for the device's first two and a half weeks on the market.

Slightly more worrying though, just two PS Vita title made the software top thirty, with Hot Shots Golf 6 and Uncharted: Golden Abyss landing in 28th and 29th respectively.
