The 3G Vita's proved popular in Japan

The Wi-Fi version of the PlayStation Vita comfortably outsold its 3G alternative during the system’s UK launch last week, but it was a very different story in Japan.

Figures released by Media Create (via Andriasang) overnight show that the more expensive 3G device was significantly more popular during the PlayStation Vita’s domestic launch. Numbers have since levelled, despite reports of cash back campaigns and discounts for 3G units.

Overall, though, the PlayStation Vita is still struggling compared to its predecessor. Despite a strong start for Sony’s new system, the PSP performed significantly better across its first eight weeks on the market. Even more worrying for Sony, the PSP continues to outsell the PS Vita on a weekly basis in Japan, and with some big PSP titles still in the pipeline it’s hard to see that trend ending any time soon.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom for the PS Vita: the system enjoyed an extremely strong showing on this morning’s UK software charts, and reports from around the ‘net suggest that the hardware fared well too. Hopefully we’ll get some solid Western numbers later in the week.
