Sony’s announced that the PlayStation Vita will get its first major firmware update (version 1.6) this week in Japan. Available on Wednesday, the free download will bring with it a selection of nifty new features.
The first of those is the Map application, which adds satellite navigation to the handheld. You’ll be able to use the app while out driving or walking to ensure you don’t get lost in the snow like this writer did over the weekend.
Other tweaks include an addition to the Camera application to allow video recording, and Mac support. Previously the PS Vita could only interface with a Windows PC, but Sony’s said that it will release an OSX version of the Content Management Assistant program imminently.
The new firmware will also reflect the PlayStation Network’s name change to Sony Entertainment Network.
We're assuming all of these features will be available on day one when the PlayStation Vita launches in Europe and North America later this month.

Hopefully they will add a Geocaching app in the near future. Everything is there to make it happen!!
About time they get a Mac version of Content Manager out.
Does Sony call this stuff "Apps"? Well, whatever they call it, glad to see it being updated. As a guy who grew up watching Star Trek and wondering why they even bothered taking their communicators down to the planets surface as you just knew they were never going to work, we now have satellite navigation, in a toy. Sadly, this is the one feature my iPod Touch lacks that I wish it had. Well originally had. Now I really want that back touch screen, which just makes so much sense I'm surprised it didn't come out years ago. I can't really think of anything that wouldn't work better with a back touch screen - moving a map, flipping thru photos, clicking on an icon. OK, typing, but I bet it could be learned.
1.6 also now makes the PS Home button pulse when it's charging. Hooray for flashy lights
