The next generation chatter keeps getting hotter: according to a Forbes report citing “former” AMD employees, Sony is to switch away from nVidia technology for its next system – adopting an AMD chip similar (but presumably much, much beefier) to the XBOX 360.
Both AMD and Sony representatives refused to comment on the matter, but Forbes seems pretty confident in its source.
The switch would allow Sony to create a cheaper and more developer friendly machine, but it does raise slight concerns about backwards compatibility.
You can discuss whether you think the PlayStation 4 is necessary yet in our Talking Point on the matter.

Why not? I see no problem with amd ? well then backwards compatability but ill be cheaper so it might be worth it. and on the PS4 disccusion i say theres no need for it, The ps3 and move how can it get any better?
Cheaper for sure as AMD tech is cheaper then nVidia tech, but I've always had less problems with nVidia then I have had with AMD, on PC in any case.
For a second there I read the headline as "Sony using UMD tech for new console" and I was like WTF?! LOL!
So, Nintendo is using AMD technology. Microsoft will be using AMD technology. And finally, Sony is looking to use AMD technology if there's any wieght to this report/rumor.
Interesting.
Just upgraded my Nvida 8400GS w/ an AMD HD5450 last night. Well it was sort of a sideways upgrade as the fan went out on my 8400GS so my computer kept freezing so I went w/ a fanless card. Maybe Sony is going AMD for lower heat output?
As for backwards compatibility - why build in backwards compatibility when you can resell all the old games @ $20 a pop? GOW, Ico, Jak. Sorry, I'm still annoyed about BC being removed. Not annoyed enough to hack anything, but annoyed enough to not re-buy games I already own. I did buy GOW Origins though as I've never owned a PSP. Well I did for about 48 hours but that's another rant.
AMD FTW
