After Sony announced Vita sales of 1.2 million, Pocket Gamer claims the system's UK launch week sales were well below predecessor the PSP.
When PSP launched in the UK in September 2005 it shifted around 185,000 units in its first week. According to Pocket Gamer, Chart-Track figures claim the console sold "around one quarter" of that figure, putting it around the 45,000 mark.
Last year Nintendo claimed it sold 113,000 3DS consoles in two days in the UK, though other estimates put that figure closer to 90,000. If true that Vita has sold less than half that number it's not quite the quick start platform-holder Sony will have hoped for.
Still early days, though.

So does that mean that most of those additional 650,000 units were from North America?
Probably doesn't help that GAME axed all of Ubisoft's launch titles. That certainly would have put me off if I could even afford the damn thing.
I just hope GAME last long enough for me to cash in this gift card against a copy of BIT.TRIP SAGA...
Ouch!
Oy vey, that's not a good....hopefully they don't have suffer enough for Sony to decided to do the same thing Nintendo did for the 3DS. =.=;
{Though highly welcomed since I would be able to afford it.}
Something I noticed while standing in Target a few days ago - the Vita is the same price as the PS3 - $249. I wonder if that stopped anybody from buying a Vita. And the PS3 doesn't even need a memory card.
Of course the 3DS was $100 MORE than a Wii when it launched, hence the subsequent $80 price drop to only $20 more, but the Wii is rubbish compared to a 3DS. Can't believe the 3DS didn't get a proper mobile web browser though.
@rjejr Interesting theory. Even though I think that someone who wants a Vita won't buy a PS3 instead in the store because of the price (and vice versa), but psychologically it does make the Vita look more expensive.
With other markets priced around 50% more expensive than the US, I would not be surprised at all if it sold lots in the US and little everywhere else. I also wonder how many people from outside the US are importing and not buying locally.
Aside from putting a memory card in the box, I really don't know what Sony could've done better in the Western markets. The hardware itself is very impressive and the price is more than fair for what you get and the launch lineup is better than what 3DS had day one at the same price.
