The UMD Passport programme for Japan will not make it across to North America, according to Kotaku.
In Japan, PSP owners were granted cheaper downloads of digital versions of their UMDs for the purposes of transferring to Vita. It seems users in North America won't get the same deal, but we're waiting to hear more from Sony on the matter.
Does this affect your decision to pick up a Vita or are you still on course for its upcoming release?

bee-bi-bo-bummer.
I only had 2 games on my PSP, so not to bad for me.
Plus it would still cost $!
I had planned for this happening. I had read that they were developing the passport program but that there would only be limited releases of UMD games available. Thankfully FF Tactics came onto the PSN recently and all the games I love were now available digital. I have a couple of UMD's, but they are kind of lame games. Besides, I bet PSN will still slowly release old PSP games for sale on the PSN; such as Crisis Core.
Given the reaction to the Japanese program here in the West, I think they're dodging a bullet here.
A better solution, from where I'm sitting, would be to arrange some really strong PSP sales down the line. Steam does this kind of stuff all the time — why not sell off PSP titles for £5 for 24 hours?
Big time fail Sony, you couldn't do it to the PSP go and still didn't with Vita
Just let me mail you my UMD's with a small fee and send me download codes.
Well, looks like I will be rebuying the two (soon to be three) PSP titles I own at full price when I get a Vita :/
This is highly annoying. Guess I'll just hold on to my PSP then.
I'll be too busy playing Vita games to notice.
While I may not own the original PSP or any PSP games myself, I can certainly see how this news would be very disappointing to current PSP owners. Especially those with an extensive library of PSP games. A real shame that Japan is getting this program but the US is not.
