Microsoft’s decision to boost the maximum XBOX Live Arcade achievement tally from 200 points to 400 points creates an interesting dilemma for multiplatform releases. Many games use the same unlock conditions for achievements and trophies across both platforms, but Sony has confirmed that it is not going to follow Microsoft’s lead. Not yet, anyway.
A spokesperson for the company told IGN:
There are plenty of downloadable games on PSN that currently offer platinum trophies.
The company continued that Sony has “a standard and consistent system to determine the trophies available for a particular game. The overall scope of the game determines the trophies available, not method of distribution”.
It’s going to be interesting to see how multiplatform developers respond to the change. While Sony sounds pretty bullish about its intentions, we imagine that the platform holder will allow multiplatform developers to maintain parity between XBOX Live Arcade and PSN releases. There would be uproar if identical titles ended up having more achievement “value” on XBLA than PSN.

honestly I wouldn't expect Sony to have to change anything. I don't pay any attention to Xbox and their gamer scores so I wouldn't care how many points they get. I guess this would only affect the surely very small percentage of people that 1) have both systems 2) care enough about gamer scores to choose which system they buy a game for based solely on which version gives them more points. 3) care enough to do some sort of math to figure out the equivalent xbox points that a playstation trophy is worth

Agreed. I don't think people choose between games based on trophies or achievements. Usually, I would think people would just choose one platform and stick with it for overall trophies/gamer score.
I'd PREFER Sony to keep the system the same as it is now. As much as I love trophies, I'd prefer quality over quantity. (Ignore my plat in Sly Cooper plz....)
Put me down as another one who doesn't care. I've had a 360 since December, and I don't find Achievements/GamerScore at all compelling, as it's just a number which grows indefinitely.
I certainly wouldn't call myself a Trophy Whore, as I have many games with unearned trophies. But when there's a game I really like, I'll do my best to get the Platinum. I know they're both virtual items based on a score, but to me there's just something about the Trophy system and its levels which seems more definitive and worthwhile than Achievements and an otherwise disconnected total score.
So I have no idea what this is about since I don't have an Xbox360, and I care very little about trophies, my main complaint being when I do want to check them it takes so long to sync online that I usually cancel around 15%, but I'm curious. Why should Sony care? If 200 points equal 10 bronze, 5 silvers and a plat, and 400 points equals 20 bronze, 10 silvers and a plat, who cares? Steam has achievements too, is Sony supposed to care what they do? Buy a game, play a game, get all the trophys, medals, awards, achievements, points, accolades and ribbons you want, does it really matter how the systems differ?
I really don't see this as something Sony should spend an iota of time worrying about. What they should worry about - in comparison - is: getting the store updated on time (any time, just pick one and make it consistent, or fire Grace Chen); getting demos for all games like MS does (how the heck does the same game on both systems get a demo on Xbox but not PS3?); stop letting MS get so many head starts on game release dates, whether it's a week, a month or a year, it's embarrassing. These are the 3 things I see people complaining about and comparing the companies on the most. I don't see the achievement change breaking into that top 3.
