Simpler times

Supporting reports made by Forbes, Kotaku has gone live with a rumour claiming that Sony is to ditch the PS3’s heavily publicised Cell processor in favour of something a little simpler.

According to Kotaku, Sony is working with AMD to create the PlayStation 4’s graphics chip as opposed to rival Nvidia.

The Cell was heavily criticised in the PS3’s infancy for being a serious challenge for developers to work on.

It’s believed that AMD will provide both the CPU and GPU for the PlayStation 4, leading to speculation that the manufacturer will use AMD Fusion architecture. With studios already building content with that chip’s technology in mind, the theory is that Sony could easily encourage them to support PS4 as well.

We’re already seeing signs that Sony is keen to switch to an easier development environment. The PlayStation Vita is widely regarded by many developers as the easiest PlayStation platform to work on. It’s something we highlighted in our Future of PlayStation feature.

Naturally Sony refused to comment on Kotaku’s rumours, but with Forbes also stating a similar thing – it seems likely that there’s a nugget of truth in these reports.
