Not your average crossbow

Resistance: Burning Skies doesn’t appear to be particularly ambitious – but as the first fully featured handheld multiplayer shooter, competence should prove more than enough.

In this brand new PlayStation Blog interview, producer Craig Phillips has provided a full run-down of the multiplayer component’s primary features.

Modes span the bog-standard Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Survival. The developer’s keeping quiet about the latter mode for the time being, but we’re guessing it’ll be some kind of co-operative horde mode, which should prove a lot of fun on Vita.

The game features a combination of traditional Resistance weapons and a few newcomers. The Mule for example is an intriguing fusion of crossbow and shotgun, with an alternate fire that detonates upon impact. All of the weapons will make use of the touch-screen in some way.

Burning Skies will also take advantage of Near, introducing a meta-game that rewards you with XP bonuses for spreading the Chimeran infection across the globe. Sounds like a really interesting use of the GPS-driven social network – we’re eager to see how it plays out in the final game.

You’ll be able to take to the Burning Skies come late May when the title releases exclusively on Vita. Are you excited?
