Capcom has blamed genre cannibalism as the reason for Street Fighter X Tekken’s less than stellar sales. The company confirmed in a Q&A that it believes the crossover has lagged at retail due to the large number of similar titles released within a short period.
The publisher itself has launched three versions of Street Fighter IV in the past four years. That’s in addition to NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat reboot and countless iterations of BlazBlue.
Street Fighter X Tekken has sold 1.4 million copies to date. A Vita version of the fighter is set to release later this year.

Sure, Capcom. I'm sure none of it had to do with you admitting you locked characters on the disc that people would have to pay for later. I think making people pay for your game twice is a good way to deter sales!
Even if this was the problem, it wouldn't be anyone elses fault but Capcom's.
i hate capcom!
@Chrono_Cross Yep, pretty much.
gee, Capcom, maybe it's time you focused on one of your other IPs for a while? /eyeroll

@get2sammyb lets not forget ANOTHER version of Street Fighter X Tekken coming in November.
@get2sammyb
After reading that list, and throwing Mortal Combat into the mix, I guess it's a good thing Sony went the Super Smash Brothers route for their mascot fighter. The world doesn't need another mano-a-mano 2D versus game after all.
@rjejr: Especially considering that none of those lists included Tekken titles without Street Fighter in them, or Soul Calibur. Basically, the fighting game genre had a resurgence that began largely because of Street Fighter IV, but now it's being run into the ground.
Honestly, I find this excuse for this specific game's poor sales pathetic. If they want more sales, all they have to do is release that character DLC pack for free instead of charging $20. There, problem solved.
@rjejr Yep, and there's countless versions of the BlazBlue games too.
@turtlelink Where'd you hear about that?
@Mickeymac He's talking about the Vita version.
@get2sammyb Okay. I was very confused for a second there. Personally, I'm just waiting for the Vita version before I get SFxT. I have no problem with the sudden influx of fighting games. They're basically all I play besides RPGs, and there haven't been many of those lately, so this gives me more to play.
@Mickeymac, Yes, I was talking about the Vita version. However, I don't want to get the game anytime before fall just in case a Super/Ultimate thing gets announced for a cheaper price later this year. And judging from the amount of problems I'm hearing about that game, I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
Wait, a Capcom game isn't selling well? I wonder why!?
drop the price to $20 and I'll get it
come out a monster hunter vita and it will sell better
I don't think 1.4 mil copies sold, especially the way things have gone for the industry lately, is that bad. But Capcom's timing was off on this one, it's not even the fact that we've seen a lot of fighters that hurt them, it's that they decided it was a good idea to release SF X Tekken the same day as Mass Effect 3. Eventhough it craps all over the garbage that is ME 3 it was never going to get as much attention.
Best game on the list:
.2. Super Street Fighter II HD Turbo Remix (2009)
Perhaps it also has a lot to do with people just not wanting a crossover fighter? I can't say i was at all impressed with Street Fighter IV- I've been a fan of the series for many a year and iterration- but it's a dull game. 3rd Strike is probably the technical pinnacle of Street Fighter fighting, with Alpha 3 being my personal favourite after Turbo. But the crossover just left me thinking that characters from a very different mechanic are just going to be locked in to a 2D plain- where's the fun in that? Tekken was special because it used the depth of the arena well enough to make it count. As for the proposed Tekken X SF- erm, anyone remember EX? 'nuff' said I think.
There will always be room for Street Fighter of some sort in my collection and for whatever my 'current' platform may be. The best current Street Fighter (IMO) is the HD Turbo remake, looks nice, plays like it should and online works well enough for me to piledrive my mate in Oz and him to hear me laugh while I do it!
@Gamer83 It's not bad at all really. The problem is that they expected it to do much better.
We could also use a FEW more backgrounds. Yawn.
