The future

Sony’s been experimenting with augmented reality for years, and the sum of its investigations are really starting to show on PlayStation Vita. While competing platforms play catch-up, Sony's releasing some really impressive stuff on its new handheld – and that's set to be expanded next month with the release of PulzAR.

Terrible name aside, PulzAR puts you at the centre of a “potentially Earth-shattering puzzle game that turns nearly any flat surface into an epic battle against time and a looming celestial event with the use of your AR cards”.

We’ll let producer Shaun Wharton explain:

You see, in PulzAR, the Earth is in grave danger. Somewhere just beyond our planet’s outer atmosphere, a series of colossal asteroids are spinning ever closer on a deadly collision course to wipe out humankind. So far, all attempts to divert their trajectory have failed. Now, in mankind’s desperate last stand against certain catastrophe, it’s up to you to command a network of explosive rockets and try to blast the asteroids into a harmless meteor shower before they reach Earth.

You must use the Vita’s packaged AR cards to program a rocket guidance system using “reflectors, splitters, and filters”. It’s not exactly the most original idea, but the augmented reality should bring something fresh to the tried and tested puzzle formula.

Are you a fan of the Vita's growing catalogue of AR experiences?
