Sony’s released a new optional system software update for PlayStation Vita. The download – which is available now in North America – doesn’t appear to do much other than offer enhanced “software stability".
We're not sure we understand the point of optional firmware updates. Surely if the download's not important enough to be mandatory, then it's not really necessary at all?

Well, this seems to be an update to make us think that the Vita is not dead.
As long as they include this in the next mandatory update its ok.
They should release something better though, after Uncharted my Vita became a dust magnet.
Buy another game . . . ?
Well, I've noticed over time that they're never willing to outright admit when firmware updates improve backwards compatibility on their devices (a fact that kept me from playing Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories longer than I NEEDED to wait). So it's always POSSIBLE, however unlikely, that this update does some of that. They wouldn't see that as mandatory presumably because they feel the BC market is still a vocal minority (as evidenced by their PAINFULLY slow progress on improving the list of confirmed compatible titles). Of course, this is all speculation and doesn't really mean squat as of yet. The Vita BC community will have to re-check incompatible titles post-update to confirm or disprove.
@KALofKRYPTON: Until today, there hasn't been another game worth buying for the Vita, IMO. Dunno what UnawareQuagsire's opinion of Gravity Rush is, though. Point is, the Vita's library is pretty poor, and we're not interested in buying games we don't want to play (shocker!).
