There’s no doubt that Apple’s massively successful App Store has had a disruptive impact on the games industry. But while it plays host to a wealth interactive gems, it’s also plagued by numerous sub-par experiences.
Sony’s hoping to change that with PlayStation Mobile, by ensuring that only high quality content makes its way onto the cross-platform service. Chatting with GamesIndustry International, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s Jim Ryan explained:
[We're] ensuring that anything that is offered on this platform is of proper PlayStation quality. People [will] feel comfortable and safe that they are not going to inadvertently stumble upon any of the junk that exists in that wider marketplace.
Ryan added that it’s important Sony appropriately filters the content because the PlayStation brand is at risk otherwise. “Can we be completely laissez faire?” he pondered, “I don't think so because then we'll end up just like all the rest and that can't happen.”
Over 50 developers are currently working on PlayStation Mobile projects, with indie developers actively encouraged to sign up to the program. If you'd like to have a go at making your own PlayStation games, an open beta version of the software development kit can be downloaded from here.

In defense of Apple's App store, while I'm sure the overwhelming majority of games are probably crap, I do like their set-up on my iPod Touch (the only Apple device I'm familiar with). Open the Apps Store app, view a list of either Top Paid or Top Free games, find one I like, read reviews to see if I want to spend the money or DL something free. That's 2 layers of filtering to help me avoid the trash.
Now compare this to Download History on the PS3. I just upgraded my HDD to 500GB from 80GB and I want to redownload some of my old stuff. Go to my list of over 600 items and try to find stuff. Can't search the list. Can't alphabetize the list. Can't filter the list for only games or demos or themes (most of my themes were corrupted after restoring the back-up). That's a sub-par experience.
My point is - w/ Vita sales lagging, Sony should be worrying about getting games on the Vita and ways to make their software better. Let gamers sort out the trash.
have you tried entering the name of what you're looking for in the search bar on PSN?
@rjejr Search on PSN if you know you've bought/downloaded it already.
This is good for PS Mobile. App STore and Google Play (especially) are chock full of crap. Obviously there are the tools of the front end to make an informed choice, but by cutting out the crap is a good idea.
