In order to comply with a new law, Sony has announced that it will close down the PS3’s PlayStation Store in South Korea from 29th June.
The “Game Industry Promotion Act” forbids a company from authenticating accounts with a user’s real name or age – something that the PlayStation Store requires. SCE’s Korean branch said that it won’t have time to implement the required changes before the law goes into action on 1st July, forcing it to temporarily remove the online storefront.
During the outage, users will be unable to purchase and download new content. Thankfully, online play will still be possible, as will access to the PlayStation Store via the PSP and Vita.
Sony aims to restore the functionality sometime this year, but was unable to provide a specific timeline.
