... And this is why people constantly complain about the PlayStation 3’s overuse of firmware updates. If it’s not bad enough that we got a mandatory update to improve headset support (really!) less than a week ago, Sony’s announced that a new optional update is available now.
Unsurprisingly, the download does nothing other than improve “software stability”. That’s Sony speak for, “Well, we broke something in the last update so now we’re being forced to fix it.”
It’s not a big deal – you don’t have to download it, and if you do it takes about five minutes at most – but the constant stream of iterative updates is still frustrating. Especially when you consider that Sony itself seems fully aware of the frequency of firmware updates, too.
Fix this for PlayStation 4, please.

My PS3 is pretty much just a Blu-Ray player and Netflix viewer. Sometimes I just want to turn it on and watch something, not go through some sort of crazy song-and-dance firmware update EVERY TIME I TURN IT ON. (disclaimer: sure I may be exaggerating but by golly not by much. Heh)
I have Plus so the console downloads the update when I'm sleeping and when I wake up and turn it on, it takes like 1 minute to update.
I'd rather had one system that is constantly improving than one that was discarded years ago like the Wii.
I dont understand why so many are outraged by all the firmware updates? STOP WITH THE WHINiNG! Its not REALLY that big a deal. Like UnawareQuagsire said its better to have an updated console that one that the manufacturer just abdoned. And for those who say they ' always have to update everytime they turn on their PS3 ' well if you downloaded the firmware updates more often there wouldnt be 4 of them waiting for you when do turn on the PS3. It can be annoying yes, but seriously folks this line of complaint is just silly now.
My "frustration meter" is definitely sliding to the right but my "outrage meter" barely moved. I don't wanna put words in Sammy's mouth but he seems the same.
I should have said, "...but my 360 doesn't need to update this much" but I think we all know where that would have gone.
@3Above I agree with you for the most part. There's a lot of exaggeration regarding the updates in my opinion: it really doesn't take "20 minutes to download" and nor are they as frequent as people like to make out. However, if they're going to do a firmware update, it would be nice if they made sure they got it right in the first place. Having these minor, iterative updates (even if they are optional) is just plain annoying.
I use the PlayStation Headphones and I quite appreciated the last update. System updates don't bother me and never have, the ones that frustrate me are the constant game patches — that's what gets ridiculous.
Personally firmware updates really don't bother me at all. They are very quick.
The games ones can if they are big and take a long time to download. Brand new game. Excited to play, put disk in....then...wait while it download a patch. Aaahh.
Updates haven't' bothered me yet for PS3. I only play my Xbox once every few months so I feel annoyed when I turn it on for it to update for 20 minutes. My fault though. I bet if I didn't play my PS3 so often it'd feel the same so I can understand frustration.
I do wish they published more detailed/accurate change logs though
Yeah, I don't think firmware updates are such a big deal. I dunno, I suppose it's mildly annoying, but not a huge problem, imo.
