In a move that made at least one Push Square staff member a little too excited, SEGA has announced it's to re-release legendary SEGA Saturn game NiGHTS into Dreams on PSN later this year.
The download will come with enhanced HD graphics, 16:9 widescreen support, leaderboards and Trophies, or you can relive the original 32-bit experience in the Saturn mode.
In an extra nugget of fan service, SEGA chose to make the announcement on the 16th anniversary of NiGHTS' Japanese launch.
The first screenshots are below, with a trailer to follow soon.
DREAMS DO COME TRUE – SEGA ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF NiGHTS INTO DREAMS HD
LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO— 5th July, 2012 —SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced that after 16 years since the original release the HD remake of fan-favourite flying platformer, NiGHTS into dreams™, will be coming to Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®Network, and Windows PC Digital Download this autumn. To prove this news isn’t a dream itself, check out the first official NiGHTS trailer online.
“The SEGA Saturn offered many unique gaming experiences, and NiGHTS into dreams stands out as one of the most recognisable titles that found a home on the system,” said Chris Olson, Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA. “We’ve gotten a lot of requests about this game over the years, and are very happy to be able to give both former Saturn owners and new players a
chance to play it in its most beautiful form to date this autumn.”
Initially released for SEGA Saturn in 1996, NiGHTS into dreams is one of the best-regarded games in SEGA history and a favourite of many fans thanks to its innovative 3D gameplay and multi-faceted level design. This new version will bring Nightopia to vivid life with improved HD graphics and a 16:9 aspect ratio, as well as added support for leaderboards, trophies, and achievements. It will also feature an optional Saturn Mode that will let players experience the game with the original graphics intact.

Wow, I never expected this. It looks absolutely gorgeous. I have fond memories of the Saturn title, so I'm looking forward to this.
The happiest day of my life.
I'm calling it now but Christmas Nights will make it as DLC.
Am excited! Only reason I kept my Sega Saturn. Now I can play it on my PS3!
Sweet! Now I don't have to track down a copy of the Sega Saturn version!
That's it. I'm not holding it off any longer. I'm buying a PS3, by hook or by crook.
I think when this comes out I will put together a series of videos showing how to be amazing at NiGHTS because I am amazing at NiGHTS.
Well, it's about time they release a new version of this game out West. Now I can actually try it! What a concept!
YES! I was gonna wait until I eventually get a Saturn to play this, but still, this is truly glorious!
@James Please do!
I have never played this. I'm going to get it when it's released.
The original Saturn mode sold me!
This is awesome news!! Day one buy!
@PikminMonster While I whole-heartily support that decision, it will probably be released elsewhere too
Jet Set Radio, Nights, Sonic Adventure 2.... I think SEGA is taking over the PSN.
Awesome, though the 'Saturn Mode' is a little silly.
@KALofKRYPTON How so? TBH I'll be watching to see how accurate the Saturn emulation is; the machine is notoriously difficult to emulate.
This year SEGA's got Virtua Fighter 5, Jet Set Radio and NiGHTS on or coming to PSN. This makes me inordinately happy.
@James
Silly in it's pointlessness- other than your stated curiosity, I can't really see any reason, need or want to play a game at (at best Saturn output) 480i resolution through your PS3.
i still have a Saturn, and hooked up to my Bravia it's pretty painful to see. That's why I got hold of an old Trinitron to run it on, far more pleasant experience!
@KALofKRYPTON For nostalgia, innit? Plus it'll be going through HDMI instead of SCART so there shouldn't be any nasty blurring or dodgy colour definition. I hooked my Saturn up to my Samsung HDTV not long ago and it still looked pretty good!
@James
Nostalgia's often best left in the past, or at least on it's intended hardware
I tried Saturn Bomberman (with 2 multi-taps and seven pads) through the Bravia, looked pretty bad, much better on a CRT.
@PikminMonster If you read the press release or watch the video it's also on Xbox 360 and Steam.
This, Jet Grind Radio and Crazy Taxi would make a most excellent disc compilation for the holidays. [Sonic gets enough of his own comps he doesn't need to be on this one, though SA is still my first and favorite Sonic game (I'm weird that way).]
If anybody was more excited than James they must've died on the spot.
@rjejr Weird indeed!
@nathanuc1998 On Wii U?, maybe? (I'm too decent to buy a Xbox. Sorry XBox fans)
@James I'll second that notion. I'm ecstatic to see all this SEGA love. If they bring Panzer Dragoon and Shenmue, I think I just might pop with glee!
Wow, I've had heard many great things about this game. GREAT NEWS!
@Slapshot So we just wait here for a Panzer Dragoon/Shenmue announcement so we can watch @James explode with glee? COUNT ME IN!
@PikminMonster Nah, NiGHTS is my number one SEGA game. The only thing that would get me to explode would be a Shining Force III compilation and that's never, ever, ever going to happen, so everybody's safe
