Outspoken Platinum Games developer Hideki Kamiya has kick-started the console wars once more, describing the upcoming PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale as a “rip-off” without “morals”. The Devil May Cry developer really tore into the title on Twitter overnight, prompting plenty of inevitable angry responses.
We don’t necessarily take issue with Kamiya’s comments – PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is clearly inspired by Nintendo’s own Super Smash Bros., something that developer SuperBot Entertainment has not been shy about acknowledging. At the end of the day, though, almost everything in existence is inspired by something else – y'know, a bit like Kamiya’s own Okami. Shots fired.

But that's the difference which you seem to be ignoring in the article, Okami (like almost all games) is inspired by past titles while PSASBR isn't inspired by Smash Bros, it's a blatant rip off. And one that looks poor too. Sadly the Sony characters just aren't as strong as the ones Nintendo have got and the only 'new' idea is the pointless one where you have to be powered up to actually kill someone. It just looks absolutely dreadful.
@rastamadeus I'm assuming that, like Kamiya, you've played the final game to establish this opinion?
Note that I use "look" several times before trying to make me seem like the fool you assumed I was. I am willing to be proved wrong when the game is out I just highly doubt I will.
From what I've seen of the game thus far, I think they'd have been better off ripping off Smash Bros. even more than they do. Y'know, like with the good old percentage system and stuff. Not really much of a fan of the gameplay system thus far.
He's an awesome guy to follow on Twitter. It's nice to see into the minds of the devs who bring us these awesome games and he's very honest about his opinions. While I don't share opinions with him and PAT, I guess I can understand where he's coming from.
I don't think I'm going to be a fan of All-Stars but I wasn't a fan of Smash Bros either.
As for them "ripping" them off I don't really care it happens in every form of entertainment.
I'm guessing saki was involved in the tweet
It's hard not to agree with the guy when even the devs are admitting to their "inspiration". It is a rip-off, and a weak one at that. If you are going to copy a game either make a cheap flash version or make it better. No, I haven't played it yet, but my family has put almost 400 hours into Brawl (thank you Nintendo for the record keeping) and unless this has a lot more to it than we've seen - half of our time w/ Brawl has been on the 2 player story driven Subspace Emissary game within a game - and tons of variables to the gameplay I just don't see how this will be a better game. Well it will look better, and PS3 vs. Vita is genius, but I really wish the game had at least a little originality to it. I was really hoping for a Powerstone layout like GOW:Ascension multiplayer has so the "inspiration" wasn't so obvious.
I feel like All-Stars is absolutely a rip-off of Smash Bros. but that isn't a bad thing. this game is something that all of us thought of once smash bros was released. having sony's best fight it out like crash, cloud, and croc(it was a different time).
My argument for All-Stars is that it may be copying the fighting style of smash bros. but how do you not criticize the fact that every 2d fighter looks and plays virtually the exact same, with different fighting styles thrown in. Somebody originated the side by side fighters with two health bars overhead, but everybody "copied" and uses it.
I hear the game plays very differently from Smash Bros. Just cause it looks just like Smash doesn't mean it plays exactly like it.
My main problem - beside the ripping off - is that Sony's characters just aren't in anyway as appealing as Nintendo's. Yes they're all from good series's but the Nintendo characters are just much, much better. They even know it by putting in several third party characters. Yes Brawl had Sonic and Snake but thats on top of loads of their own creations (and Snake was put in after Kojima begged for him to be). The only company that has a long and varied character roster to really go against Smash Bros would be Sega. Anyway, apologies for the rant.
@rastamadeus I too am a big fan of those charismatic characters Roy, and, er, Marth. I don't want to turn this into console wars, but I think people need to get a perspective on a few points. Not every character in Super Smash Bros. is a household name — a handful are. No other company in the industry can compete against the likes of Mario and Link, but let's be honest, Super Smash Bros. is great because it bundles so much nostalgia in one game. That's where PlayStation All-Stars can deliver. I want to play as the stupid mannequin thing from Echochrome, and I don't care that my Mum doesn't recognise it.
Let's also not forget that Super Smash Bros. is not a perfect game, and there are areas that SuperBot Entertainment can genuinely enhance the formula. Brawl's netcode, for example, remains a mess to this very day — Nintendo's going to have to up its game with the Wii U title when PS All-Stars launches with an actually decent online component. (Which, judging from the public beta, it's going to have.)
Let's please put the pitchforks away until the game releases. Rip-off is such a derogatory term, and this argument is so boring.
@get2sammyb
I fully agree. It really doesn't matter if the character is "well-known" or not. And I find it really dumb that people even care about that. Playstation All-Stars has huge amounts of potential, and was loads of fun when I had a chance to demo it at EVO. People make horrible judgement without always looking at the big picture.
Keep up the good articles Sammy, I always seem to agree with your thoughts haha. P.S. I'm excited to try all the great characters so far, only person on my wishlist is Kat! Sure hope shes in it
I just hate the way people change their attitude toward things so easily. A year ago it was 'Sony should totally do a Super Smash Bros. game! Think of how awesome it would be!'
Now it's 'Sony has totally ripped off Nintendo! This is an outrage!'
I'm sorry, but Sony are doing what they do best here - doing what Microsoft and Nintendo are doing less and less these days - catering to 'core' gamers. Thousands asked for this very game, and now that it's coming we get whiners crawling out of the woodwork to call foul on the whole thing. Get some perspective.
@ShogunRok
Great point!
@ShogunRok When you're right you're right. As for the argument that Nintendo characters are 'better' and 'have more charm and nostalgia' that only applies for people you have fond memories of Nintendo characters. I had SNES but i have no attachment to Mario, Link Kirby ect. So that whole line of reasoning doesnt apply to me or anyone else who doesnt share a reverance for Nintendo characters. I can see how it would for alot of people but not me. And i certainly hope Mr. Kamiya doesnt play any Gameloft games.
everything is a rip-off of something else. Playstation All-Stars is so far the best rip-off of SSB, especially compared to the TMNT game that came out on the wii.
I love you Hideki Kamiya!
Any way you slice it, Playstation All-Stars IS a rip-off of Smash Bros.
Just the latest in a long line of 'me too' moves by Sony.
HOWEVER, that's not to say it can't be a good game. Also, get2sammyb makes some good points. Not every character in Smash Bros, is a 'household name; the reason why the roster is so appealing is because it's a mixture of both the well-known and the obscure; something that also seems to be evident in All-Stars. Also, Sony has a prime opportunity to illustrate just how successful a game such as this can be in the online space (not to mention the cross-platform play with the Vita version).
