Recently appointed Sony overlord Kaz Hirai has pointed out that the PlayStation Vita is performing near expectations globally, but that it's "trending behind in certain territories". Earlier this month, the platform holder revealed that the system had sold 2.2 million units worldwide.
While Hirai wouldn’t reveal which territories he was referring to, it’s safe to assume that Japan is the biggest offender. Given the success of the PSP in the region, Sony must have expected more from its latest handheld. However, the nation is currently gripped by 3DS fever.

@Toploader I have. I don't like it.

For me, the monster hunter experience relies greatly on whether you are playing in a group or not. for me, online just doesn't cut it which is why I never got into monster hunter tri.
I love my Vita
ya never before have a console or portable have all the top 5 jrpgs in one...monsterhunter,pokemon,final fantasy,dragon quest and shin megami tensei...japan loved jrpgs...and the 3ds is a dream come true for them...ninty really wanted to buried the vita fast and quick...
Sony really need more japanese games. I mean, Uncharted was main game on the launch in Japan. It's just sick.
I really thought I was going to like Monster Hunter from what I had heard about it and from my taste in games, but I rented it for the Wii and it did not blow me away. It was okay and all, but there wasn't any story worth talking about and I definitely didn't feel compelled to play for very long at all on single player. Nothing about it pulled me in at all. I can see how it would be more fun with a few friends but there are many other games I'd rather be playing with a few friends. Suffice it to say I'm surprised it would be the reason a console becomes a success.
Sony simply needs to proactively do something to convince Japan to choose the Vita over the PSP. I really don't understand why they don't agree with that statement. That's the first obvious step. They need to do that even before they worry about competing with the 3DS. Even though they're still making money from the PSP, that is thinking short term and they are absolutely shooting themselves in the foot by not actively steering people away from the PSP. Only a crazy person would choose a DSi over a 3DS and it should be the same for Sony. Then, if they refuse to lower the price, they need to put together several awesome bundles for the holiday season. A Littlebigplanet bundle, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty even though it looks lame, and hopefully they have something new to announce that Japan will like the sound of like Monster Hunter or Final Fanasy. And crank up the advertising. And deliver on some promises like Remote Play because that will sell some systems hands down. Hackers proved it to work so I don't see why any new PSN titles coming out shouldn't be remote playable. I still think it will slowly come into its own like the PS3 because of the potential, but Sony sure isn't even acting like they care.
It is clear they want to consolidate the western market first. The tricky part is that usually whatever sells well in Japan doesnt sell well anywhere else.
I think the 3DS fever is gonna die down really fast I think, PSVita just needs more must have games. Nintendo is in very rough shape in North America, and with the closure of Nintendo Power, it feels like they barely have a presence here now. I'm planning to get a Vita this month, so hopefully alot of other people are thinking like me lol
On the other topic here, I like Monster Hunter and it is great depending on your taste in games I usually tell people that like simple-minded games like Dynasty Warriors to try Monster Hunter, cause they most likely enjoy it

I said this a few weeks ago. It seems like Sony only has a handheld to say they do, all their effort is put into PS3. I'm sure they'ld like it to sell better, but if they really did it would have worked with MicroSD. And Playstation Suite, Playstation Mobile, Xperia et al seem to be at odds with having a handheld at all.
@hydeks said - "Nintendo is in very rough shape in North America". Really? If the 3DS is in rough shape than Vita is DOA. And the WiiU launches soon. I'ld personally tell everybody who already doens't have one to buy a PS3 over a WiiU, but I still expect the WiiU to outsell the PS3 this holiday. "Very rough shape" indeed.
@rjejr, remember that Wii is plain dead now while PS3 is in full strength thanks to the western market. 3DS limitations compared with Vita are really extreme and Vita will assist to 3DS burial sooner or later, it is just a matter of time. I'll be happy as long as Sony focuses on western market while absolutely ignoring Japan, I hope Sony is smart enough to do not waste any effort on the eastern market.
