Despite increasing pressure from the Nintendo 3DS and smartphones, Sony has decided not to drop the price of the PlayStation Vita this year. Speaking with Eurogamer.net, SCEUK managing director Fergal Gara explained that, while the company is considering a price-cut, it will not happen until next year.
“We always aim to establish price cuts,” he explained. “So the question is not so much if, but when. We won't have an across the board price down this Christmas. But what you will see us doing is work very hard with our retail partners to add value to the product to make it more compelling.”
Gara added that the exact timing of the price cut is “still under discussion”. We imagine executives will be waiting to see whether Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation and Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified have any impact before committing to anything.

I just bought my Vita and I have to say it's worth EVER penny!! It's a great machine, very powerful, doesn't feel cheap, and is priced right for all that. Plus I got Madden 13 with it, and that's a great game, Uncharted and Resistance are really great too.
So yay, I agree with Sony, it's priced great, for right now at least.
I agree. The Vita is great!! Well worth the price. That said anytime you can get something cheaper its always good. I was hoping they would at least lower the price of the memory cards. But vita has some great games now and will ahve some more soon. They just need to advertise it.
then sony please used the extra money getting more third parties games in...no price cuts, not using any money to moneyhat exclusive like monster hunter, final fantasy...who would want to buy it?
I think the product is more than worth the price of admission, the problem for Sony is the mass market doesn't think so, so the price has to drop and really the sooner the better.
I got my Vita in the mail just the other day. Got it used on Amazon and it was only $178 dollars. Perfect condition. That's comparable with the 3DS right now, so if you don't mind used, at least that's something.
A price drop isn't a big deal right now anyway with Black Friday/Cyber Monday coming up, I have a gut feeling we'll see some sales for the vita going on. Then theres used ones like @KingGhidorah said, I've seen quite a few "like new" ones including some with memory cards, screen protectors, and other goodies cheaper than a brand new stand-alone system myself.
They have no choice. They need to sell this thing.
As much as I like to see stuff get cheaper I agree with Sony that it isn't time yet. They have several games coming out, PS All Stars Battle Royal even has a free Vita game w/ a PS3 purchase and cross-play multiplayer whatever. and they are adding PS+ to the system. And they have value to add in the form of PSN cards, PS+ discounts, memory card bundles, free DL etc. There's a lot they can do without actually lowering the system price. And the Vita has not even been on store shelves for Christmas yet as it only released in Feb. (well OK Dec. in Japan but not in the west) so there may still be teens waiting all year for this as a gift. You can't really judge the sales of a system until you see how it does at Christmas. And the 3DS XL is $199 and the WiiU $299 or $349, so this is still competitively priced for what it is. After the holidays it will need a price drop but I think they need to stay put for 1 season.
