Sony's premium PlayStation 3 racing title Gran Turismo 5 has surpassed 9 million units, developer Polyphony Digital has announced. The achingly accurate driving simulator added another 1.5 million units to its tally since the last count – which is not especially surprising considering the title was the eighth biggest selling game in Europe between January and September of this year.
Gran Turismo 3 remains the most popular title in the series, having sold an incredible 14 million units to date. Curiously, the franchise's popularity in North America appears to have declined, with the most recent release picking up just over a million sales in the region. By comparison, the aforementioned Gran Turismo 3 achieved 7 million sales.
Still, there appears to be plenty of legs left in Gran Turismo 5, and with the recently released Academy Edition still warm on store shelves, we imagine that the racer will pass the magical 10 million units milestone soon.

This game is awesome! I just wish I had a racing wheel to get the most out of it.
Probably gloating a little, but love that wheel!
still the best sim based racer on console this generation and without a doubt one of the best games for 3D on Ps3. Its great how much the game has been tweaked n had content added by patches to keep the game ahead of the competition
