CCP Games’ ambitious free-to-play first-person shooter DUST 514 will fire into open beta on 22nd January, the developer has announced. The news comes just weeks after the PlayStation 3 exclusive merged servers with its companion PC MMO, Eve Online. It’s all rather exciting stuff.
"The launch of the Dust 514 open beta is another step towards our long-term vision for CCP and Eve," said gaffer Hilmar Veigar Pétursson. "But this is just the beginning. As we have done with Eve Online, in the coming weeks, and for years to come, we will continually improve upon and add to the Dust 514 experience, as well as add deeper integration between the two games and their communities."
The company added that those of you participating in the closed beta will no longer face any more character resets, so you’re fighting for keeps from now on. If you’d like to get an early head start, you can access the online test right now by purchasing the DUST 514 Mercenary Pack from the PlayStation Store. Anyone that plays a match before 22nd January will unlock a 100,000 Skill Point bonus in the open beta.

In little over a week then, CCP will realise what a stinker of a first person shooter they've put together.
@KALofKRYPTON Haha. I haven't been keeping up with the beta, but I got a hands-on with an early version of the game at a trade show late last year. The frame rate was pretty rough, but it reminded me of MAG in a gameplay sense (which is no bad thing).
It's such a cool idea that I hope the game comes together, but, yeah, it seemed like the team had a ton of work ahead of from what I played.
@get2sammyb
I was so very excited for it. I purchased the Merc pack to play it. And via all of the promo' material, I thought 'MAG in space'.
Unfortunately it's not a patch on MAG. It could be, but the game feels pretty shoddy. Framerate is rarely an issue for me, it's the core FPS mechanics that are woefully behind the times. And CCP seem to just ignore the forums that they set up for feedback complaining of the general state of the gun play.
It is, in short, just not fun. Even when you're winning.
Sony should really have thrown the remnants of Zipper Interactive at CCP to help them out. Jump in to the Beta again- unless it changes massively in the next few days- this thing just isn't going to work.
Ni no Kuni comes out the same day. Sorry, but I'll be busy for the next month an a half.
