One of the more superfluous features of the PlayStation 4’s new controller is the speaker in the middle of the device. While we’ve known about this addition ever since the handset leaked, Sony has been very vague about how it will actually be used. However, speaking during last night’s Jimmy Fallon show, Guerrilla Games’ co-founder and managing director Hermen Hulst offered a few details about how it will be implemented in Killzone: Shadow Fall.
“The controller has so many cool new things,” he said. “We’ve got the speaker on it, so we’ve got radio messages for instance being broadcast [through the device].” The feature won’t be new to Wii owners, but we always thought that it was an underused idea on Nintendo’s system, so it’s nice to see it revisited on the PS4.
If you don’t want to irritate other people in the room, you’ll be able to reroute the sounds through the system’s bundled headset. We’re sure that there’ll be an option to turn off the functionality entirely, too. Is this a feature that you’re excited about? Let us know in the comments section below.

never would have thought of that. Thats pretty neat. Takes me back to Arkham City when the joker kept leaving batman voicemail.
Sounds awesome. The feature was dreadfully underused with the Wii, too bad, it could have been really big. I'm still waiiting to see how they're going to utilize the touch pad, though. It could be very useful if implemented correctly, hopefully Guerrilla makes use of it in Shadow Fall.
I played a demo of zombiu on my wii u, and I agree - it seems like a good, immersive idea to use the controller for radio messages.
Ya like how it works on the wii U good choice for them, big question what the heck is the touchpad for? I don't know how they can use it
I read that you can use the touchpad to swipe through menu screens in Shadow Fall. And during the Unreal Engine 4 demo Mark Cernny( i think thats his name ) said he used it to move the camera around during the demo.
i'd hope the speaker quality is much better than it is on a wii-mote.
Fun feature, really adds to the experience for me with the Wii...unfortunately it was severely underused there. : (
it is a pretty neat feature I liked from the wii-mote. hopefully it's great sound quality in the controller and better use of it too
It will probably be a single Vita/PSP speaker.
